Norway. In November, the herring migrate to the sheltered fjords of northern Norway. They are followed by the orcas and the humpback whales. They hunt the herring in the fjords and can be seen in large numbers on some days. One of the best areas to watch orcas at the moment are the waters around Skjervøy. In addition, the small fishing village in the north of Norway is the only place in the world where it is possible to snorkel with orcas.

A Guest at the Lunch Table of the Orcas

The water is deep, dark and cold. Silvery scales swirl around me. Every now and then a dead herring drifts past me, sometimes only half a herring. Everything looks a bit like a battlefield. I lift my head above the surface of the water to get my orientation. In front of me, the dorsal fins of three orcas stick out of the water. They are already quite close. I continue to fin, soon I should be able to see them. I put my head under the water.

First I hear them. Then I see their white bellies and the eye spots light up under water. Slowly the orcas take shape and suddenly I see the bait ball next to me. Then there are more and more orcas. They are everywhere: next to me, under me and some are in the middle of the Bait Ball. While some orcas are circling the bait ball, others are whirling around, swimming a loop and hitting the fish powerfully with their tail fin. They then eat the dead herring. One by one. Right next to me.

What is a bait ball? What is a Bait Ball? A bait ball is formed when small fish swim in a tightly packed spherical formation. It is a last defense measure taken by small schools of fish when threatened by predators. Orcas take advantage of this behavior and herd the herring into bait balls and then specifically strike the fish with their tail fins to kill them.

Orcas, Herrings and Michelin Men/Women

It's not so easy when you have so little mobility due to the many layers of insulation in the dry suit. For the orcas I must make a too funny picture. I drift like a Michelin man on the water surface while the elegant animals eat next to me. At some point I realize that we snorkelers are part of the game: the herrings also retreat from us and our fin strokes, we keep the bait ball in shape together with the orcas. Amazing, I still can't believe it. It's like I'm in the middle of a BBC documentary. I can see up to ten orcas at once. There is also a calf.

Sometimes an orca passes me more slowly and inspects me . They don't look at you frontally, but sideways. Since their eyes are on the sides, they can't see well what is directly in front of them. Similar to horses. Some even looked out of the water. Spy hopping is what they call it.

But the school of herring was more interesting than I was and the whales continued their hunt undeterred. It was especially impressive when one of the bulls with his huge dorsal fin passed me by. I'm not quite sure, either my heart was racing at that moment or it stood still while everything flooded in on me: the bait ball, the orcas, the sounds of the orcas, the cold, the darkness and the fish scales swirling through the water like snowflakes . In those minutes I was one of the happiest people in the world.

Is Snorkeling with Orcas dangerous?

When I told my friends and acquaintances about my travel plans to the Winter Whales of Norway, two questions kept coming up:

"Aren't orcas dangerous? What if they want to eat you?"

Each type of orca specializes in the prey available in its particular habitat. Over many generations, this has evolved into very specific feeding habits and hunting techniques . Orcas in Norway eat only herring. However, other orcas, for example in the Pacific, are different: the Southern Residents specialize in salmon, the Transient Orcas in marine mammals, and the Offshore Orcas in sharks. The orcas strongly adhere to their feeding habits. In some cases, they are not anatomically designed to change their diet at all. For example, Southern Residents' teeth and jaws are not strong enough to chew marine mammals. Even when their main food, Chinook salmon, becomes more scarce in their habitat, they do not start eating seals. Rather, they starve to death, which unfortunately is actually already happening.

"... and the Orca really doesn't eat you?"

The feeding habits aside: Many people believe in a spiritual connection between humans and whales. In some cultures, humans are even descended from whales. Some legends tell of whales coming ashore in human form to seduce young women. There are many more myths surrounding these majestic, clever sea creatures. Is there any truth to it? I don't know, but I find it super exciting and love such stories.

This was one side of the coin. Here comes the other:

Yes, there have been incidents and even deaths by orcas. However, these have happened in aquariums where orcas in captivity have attacked their trainers. No attacks on humans have yet been reported by a wild and free-living orca. You can learn more about this topic in the documentaries Blackfish and Blackfish II (links to YouTube).

The only attacks by wild orcas that I know of occurred in recent years off the Spanish and Portuguese southern coasts on sailboats. In particular, the rudder was attacked. The atypical behavior of the orcas puzzles scientists. Possible explanations are play instinct, learning of hunting strategies, stress or negative experiences with sailboats. "Never snorkel over the Bait Ball!"

Nevertheless, snorkeling with whales is not completely harmless. The arctic temperatures and the huge wild animals should by no means be underestimated. You can prepare for the temperatures with appropriate equipment. But wild animals remain wild animals. Orcas are extremely agile under water, but who can rule out that the swipe with the tail fin really only hits the herring? And sometimes humpback whales lurk in the depths and steal the herrings from the orcas with their mouths wide open. This all happens very quickly. It's bad luck to end up in the whale's mouth together with the herring. Therefore, our guides told us right at the beginning of the tour: "Never snorkel above the bait ball!

Fortunately, the throat of humpback whales is very narrow. Therefore, they cannot swallow a snorkeler, but rather spit him out again. This actually happened to a snorkeler off South Africa once. Click here to watch the video on YouTube.

"Isn't it cold there in winter? And then in the water as well!"

This question deserves a clear YES. The air temperature during our one-week tour in mid / late November was between 4 and -12° Celsius during the day. The water was between 3 and 4° Celsius. You only go into the water at these temperatures with a dry suit and several layers of insulation underneath. For the head we got a bright orange 10 mm neoprene hood and for the hands thick 3-finger neoprene gloves. Usually the snorkeling equipment including the suit can be rented from the tour provider.

A remaining risk persists.
Minimize it by using good equipment (rental equipment if necessary), practice snorkeling in local waters beforehand, talk to your doctor about snorkeling in cold waters if necessary (not always recommended), be alert underwater, watch your buddies and listen to your guides.

Winter Whales in Norway on the Polar Front

Five days liveaboard on the Polar Front

Five years ago I was already in Tromsø and Andenes to see orcas. But at that time the orcas had already moved further north in mid-February. To increase the probability of seeing them, I decided to go on a whale safari for several days as a "liveaboard" on the Polar Front. So it was possible to follow the orcas to their feeding grounds. To get closer to the orcas or to snorkel with them, we used two Zodiacs.

We saw orcas on four days and humpback whales on four days during the five days aboard the Polar Front. Only one day the weather was so bad that we did not go with the Zodiacs. On two days we were able to accompany the orcas in the Zodiac for a longer time. However, since they swam too fast, there was no possibility to snorkel with the orcas. In fact, this was only possible on one of the five days. Because only when the orcas are hunting or doing their social life, they stay long enough at one place and can be observed while snorkeling.

In the water with Orcas - When one forgets the cold

We went snorkeling twice in a row on that one day. Everything went so fast that I didn't even check the charge of my camera battery (probably my mind was already on the orcas in the water). The first time I had not seen any orcas. But my Go Pro diligently filmed the dark water, scales from the herring, dead herring or parts of herring. Sometimes other snorkelers or the Zodiac. Above water I filmed the snow flurries and sometimes a dorsal fin from an orca. On the second snorkel, my GoPro's battery died. And I was in the middle of the orcas.

Tip: In cold water, the battery of the GoPro lasts much longer when the GoPro is in the underwater housing.

Snorkeling in cold water makes you stiff and without energy. But I noticed that only later. Fortunately, there were helping hands that pulled us snorkelers into the Zodiac later. My hands were icy.

Time to thaw out - back on board

When we were back on board the Polarfont, we were all completely frozen. The breeze on the Zodiac made the -12 °C a bit colder still. The crew helped us take off our gear and we rushed down to our cabins to warm up. My fingertips ached and when I looked in the mirror, I was downright startled: my lips were thickly swollen. I hardly recognized myself. I quickly turned away from the mirror and toward my phone. I wanted to share my joy, but only managed to send a few smilies and whales with my fingers.

Regulations when Snorkeling with Orcas

A dream came true, …

To observe the orcas in their natural habitat was one of my biggest dreams. Our two Zodiacs with six snorkelers each were the only whale watching boats with the orcas that day. Other boats didn't even leave Skiervøy because of bad weather. I did not have the impression that the whales felt disturbed by us. 

... BUT

But of course this can look completely different on other days. In Norway there are no regulations for whale watching or snorkeling with orcas (as of 2022) . It is hard for me to believe that. But how the whale watching is done depends only on the whale watching agency or the boat driver. Anyone can hire a boat in the harbor and be driven out. How successful, whale friendly or safe this is for the snorkelers is then a matter of luck. That's where you come in: research beforehand with which provider you want to make the tour and avoid the too cheap offers.

After a short research on the internet I found some adventurous stories:

• too many boats at one Orca Pod
• Snorkelers jumping from the stern of the boat into the water while the engine is running with the propeller.
• Fishing boats are obstructed by snorkelers getting too close to fishing gear (sometimes to the suction device that sucks the herring from the nets into the boat).
• A boat pulls into the path of migrating orcas to let a snorkeler into the water directly in front of the whales. (We have observed this ourselves).

Meanwhile, there are requirements that whale watching boats and snorkelers must keep a minimum distance from fishing boats.

At the end of 2021, the issue was taken up and discussions about whale watching regulations continued. I hope that sensible rules will be put in place for the benefit of the orcas. At the same time, I also hope that snorkeling with orcas will not be completely banned.

Whale Watching in Norway - When and where?

The orcas follow the schools of herring. They reach the Norwegian fjords at the end of October and stay until about mid-January. However, the exact time period can vary slightly each year.

At the moment the best chances for observation are at Skjervøy. However, this has not always been the case. A few years ago, orcas were frequently seen around Tromsø and Kvaløya (Whale Island), as well as at Andenes in northern Vesterålen. Before that, they were easily seen for a long time much further south on the Tysfjord. However, as the climate has warmed, the herring have moved further and further north. It is possible that they will also eventually move on from Skjervøy.

But although the whales have already moved further north, whale watching tours are still offered from Tromsø*. Since Tromsø is easily accessible via the airport, there are still enough guests here to take the long boat trip from Tromsø to Skjervøy (about 3 hours each way).

It is more relaxing to stay in Skjervøy for a few days and start the whale watching tour from Skjervøy*. Snorkeling tours can be booked at Orca Norway, Lofoten Adventure or at Sea Safari Andenes . However, the accommodations in Skjervøy*are limited. You should book early.

For those who can't get enough and want to maximize their sightings, I recommend a multi-day tour, such as snorkeling with orcas from Waterproof Expeditions on board the Polar Front.

What else is there in wintry Norway

Humpback whales

Besides the orcas, there are also many humpback whales in the winter fjords. They also follow the herring shoals to the north. While I was snorkeling with the orcas in the water, I felt better when there was no humpback whale around. Otherwise, of course, I was always thrilled when I could watch the mighty baleen whales.

See Northern Lights

Number one in northern Norway is, of course, the aurora borealis. On clear days it is very likely that you will see it dancing in the dark night sky. Most of the time it is bright green. Sometimes it can be pink at the edges. With the help of the app "My aurora forecast" you can get an aurora forecast for your current location. This is based on the Kp index, which is a measure of solar activity.

In addition to the aurora borealis, the sunrises and sunsets , as well as the long twilight hours , are particularly beautiful to behold. The low sun makes for great, atmospheric light, which is a real highlight for photographers in particular.

Sea Eagles and Sea Gulls

While the orcas and humpback whales are chasing the herring, sea gulls and sea eagles are attracted. They hope that one or the other herring will fall off for them. So you can often see whales, sea eagles and sea gulls all together at the same time.

Galapagos, Isla Isabela, Ecuador. Los Tuneles is considered one of the highlights of Galapagos Island Isabela. At almost every corner in Puerto Villamil you can book snorkeling tours to Los Tuneles and the neighboring Cabo Rosa. Even in the program of the safari ships a stop at Los Tuneles is a fixed component. What is it? Is the place really that beautiful or just over-advertised and overcrowded? Read on and learn more about this bizarre lava landscape and its inhabitants.

Boat ride through the surreal Lava Landscape Los Tuneles

After about 45 minutes of travel, our boat slows down. We are just before Los Tuneles. The water becomes shallower and shimmers turquoise. It is crystal clear. Bizarrely shaped lava formations emerge from the water to the right and left. Some are completely bare, others are overgrown with candelabra cacti. Our captain skillfully steers the boat through the labyrinth. These unusual channels were formed from lava tunnels that collapsed in on themselves. It soon becomes clear why this place is called "Los Tuneles". After a while, we go alongside another excursion boat and go ashore.

Tip: The boat ride to Los Tuneles takes about 45 minutes. You'll have the best view if you sit on the starboard side.

Hiking over the Lava Islands of Los Tuneles

As expected, we are not the only excursion boat landing here. But the visitor groups spread out so that we hardly notice anything of the other groups.

The lava flows have produced wild formations at Los Tuneles. Former lava tunnels have collapsed and parts of them remained as natural bridges. They connect the small islets, which are very rugged and have many small caves. The lava is partly covered with lichen, in some places, it is covered with white bird droppings. There are the nests of the blue-footed boobies. In one nest there is even a young bird hidden. It can't fly yet and doesn't have blue feet. They turn blue only after about a year.

Why does the blue-footed booby have blue feet?

The blue feet of the boobies are related to their diet. It is caused by pigments called carotenoids. These are in the fish that the boobies eat. At courtship time, the male struts around in front of the females, conspicuously displaying his feet. The bluer the feet, the more successful the males are with females. This is because the intense color indicates well-fed and healthy mates.

Snorkeling at Cabo Rosa - Sea Turtles, Seahorses, and Sharks

We continue to Cabo Rosa for snorkeling. The water is quite fresh now in January with about 22 degrees. I was glad that we were equipped with shorties by the Isabela Divecenter.

Right at the beginning of our snorkeling tour, a sea turtle welcomes us. With slow flipper strokes, it passes us by. Most of the snorkelers in my group, on the other hand, move less elegantly underwater and soon the water is murky from the swirling sediment. We continue, passing mangrove roots and rocks. Finally, it's time to dive down and I can take a look into a rock cave where some whitetip reef sharks are taking their siesta. During the day they like to rest on the bottom in caves, lava tunnels, or under natural bridges.

Besides the sea turtles, the seahorse, and the sharks, we were able to see much other fish as well as the red cliff crabs typical for Galapagos. By the way, the smaller, dark crabs are not another species, but the young of the red crabs.

Conclusion: Is a visit to Los Tuneles and Cabo Rosa in Galapagos worthwhile?

The landscape of Los Tuneles is uniquely beautiful, and the wildlife is varied and impressive. Therefore, I can recommend the tour to Los Tuneles to everyone who comes to the Galapagos Island Isabella. However, you can see the place underwater that here every day hordes of tourists plow up the water. The swirled-up suspended matter has settled on the vegetation and many a surface underwater is grazed or trodden flat.

What I unfortunately missed was an announcement from our guide about how we should behave underwater in a nature-friendly way. That one should not chase sea turtles and that one should not touch them does not seem to be self-evident.

To show proper respect to the place and the animals and plants living here, do not stand on the vegetation and do not touch anything. Please be careful not to stir up sediment with your fins. This is easily done by moving your fins with the so-called Frog Kick. This is very similar to the normal leg kick in normal swimming.

What is the difference between the snorkeling site Las Tintoteras, right in front of the harbor of Isla Isabela? At Los Tuneles you have the more beautiful scenery above and below the water and the water is also a bit warmer. However, at Las Tintoteras you can see the rare Galapagos penguins and you have a shorter approach. White tip reef sharks and sea turtles are present at both snorkeling sites. And both have an equal number of tour groups.

But the scenic landmark of Galapagos is the volcanic island of Bartolome with its lunar landscape and the enchanting panoramic view of Sullivan Bay. A visit to this island should not be missed on any Galapagos trip. Read on to find out why you shouldn't miss Bartolome and what makes snorkeling here so special.

Volcanic Isla Bartolome - a Surreal Lunar Landscape

Isla Bartolome is an extinct volcano and was formed 1.5 to 2 million years ago. This makes Bartolome one of the youngest islands of the Galapagos archipelago. Its volcanic origin is hard to miss: A surreal, barren lunar landscape of black, red, orange and greenish lava formations spreads over an area of 1.2 square kilometers.

The volcanic rock is hardly weathered or overgrown. Contrast this with the bright blue sea, a golden sandy beach and a small green mangrove forest in Sullivan Bay. The icing on the cake of the scenery is the bizarre rock needle Pinnacle Rock. Today, Pinnacle Rock is a natural monument. But during the Second World War, the rock needle was the target for US Air Force exercises.

Isla Bartolome is one of the most beautiful landscapes of the archipelago and also offers interesting insights into the evolution of the islands.

The lava flows, rocks and sandy areas have long cooled down but are still extremely hostile to life. The vegetation on this dry island is accordingly sparse. Only some pioneer plants like the endemic Tiquilia nesiotica, the lava cactus and Scalesia bushes grow here. Now and then you can see a lava lizard scurrying over the stones.

The island was named after Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan of the British Navy. He sailed with Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle in 1835 as a lieutenant and chief surveyor.

Bartolome, like most of the islands in the Galapagos archipelago, is uninhabited. It rises to 114 meters above sea level. At the highest point of the island there is a small lighthouse. From up here you have a magnificent panoramic view to the neighboring island of Santiago and over the beach and turquoise sea of Sullivan Bay.

Walk to the Bartolome Viewpoint

Our boat anchored in front of Pinnacle Rock. With the Zodiac we first made a small round to greet the penguins of Bartolome. Afterwards we landed at a narrow concrete dock and could enter the island on dry feet. From here a wooden path leads through the volcanic landscape all the way up to the small lighthouse. That is after all 372 steps. On the way there were always smaller viewing platforms where we stopped and our guide told us interesting facts about the island.

Tip: The climb takes about 45 minutes and is easy to do in sandals. So you don't need to bring sturdy shoes, as you'll be walking on the wooden path the whole time.

Why you should not miss Bartolome Island?

Bartolome is a landmark of the Galapagos Islands and one of the most popular photo motifs of the archipelago. And not without reason. The view of the bay and Pinnacle Rock is magnificent. On a clear day, you should even be able to see up to ten other islands.

But Bartolome also has a lot to offer underwater. Upwelling deep water provides abundant nutrients, making the area particularly interesting for fish. And the small fish in turn attract larger fish, sharks, sea lions, penguins and seabirds.

What makes snorkeling here especially rewarding? With a little luck you can see Galapagos penguins underwater.

Snorkeling with Galapagos Penguins

A special highlight of our day trip was snorkeling with Galapagos penguins. There is a small colony living at Pinnacle Rock and also at the surrounding islands. We went snorkeling at one of the neighboring islands, Sombrero Chino. The penguins hunt here at the rocks for fish and let us watch them. For a longer time I was all alone with the penguins, the other snorkelers of my group were just at another place. The animals swam around me, sometimes came directly to me and looked at me.

Besides the penguins, the schools of colorful fish and the sea turtle were so fascinating that I didn't even notice how cold the water was. Others in my group even encountered a whitetip reef shark.

Tip: The water at Bartolome is cold. Take at least a shorty for snorkeling.

By the way, green sea turtles come to the golden sandy beach of Bartolome from January to March to lay their eggs. Maybe you will be lucky and see some.

How can one visit Bartolome Island?

Most cruise ships and liveaboards call at Bartolome Island. But also the tour operators on Santa Cruz have day trips to Bartholome in their program. The island, is one of the most visited places in Galápagos. Mostly the excursions are combined with snorkeling at Bartholomé or one of the smaller surrounding islands.

The boat trip to Bartolome takes about two hours. In addition, there is a bus ride of about 45 minutes from Puerto Ayora to the Itabaca Channel, where the boats start. The journey sounds awfully long, but there is a lot to see on the way. It is guaranteed not to be boring. First, the highlands of Santa Cruz are well worth seeing. The vegetation is dense and green, the trees overgrown with lichen and you can even spot giant turtles from the bus. Once you are on the boat, make sure you get a seat with a good view. With a little luck you will see jumping mantas or mobulas, dolphins and of course seabirds. Especially when you pass the island of Daphne you have a good chance to see blue footed boobies and nazca boobies.

You can find trekking sandals, waterproof bags, sun hats and everything else you might need for your trip to Bartolome at Bergzeit.

Costs

The tour is one of the more expensive day tours on Santa Cruz, but also an absolutely unforgettable experience. We went with Book-ec and paid over $500 for two people. The provider's prices range from $230 to $392 per person, depending on the yacht and availability. Snacks, lunch, coffee and cake were included. The boat was large and very comfortable and our guide extremely engaging. Snorkeling equipment was also included. Wetsuits, however, cost extra. You should definitely have those, at least a shorty. The water was only about 17 degrees in January. It is best to check in advance with your tour operator if wetsuits are available. If necessary, you have to rent a suit in one of the many stores in Puerto Ayora (about 5 euros per day).

Conclusion. Is it worth it?

Bartolome is a very worthwhile excursion in the Galapagos Islands. The island inspires with one of the most beautiful landscapes of the archipelago and certainly the most beautiful panoramic view. And where can you go snorkeling with penguins if not on Bartolome?

The Los Islotes Dive Spot at the Isla Espíritu Santo

To observe wild animals in their natural environment is one of the most beautiful experiences when travelling. When I learned that you can go diving with sea lions in La Paz, I was very excited. I had already been snorkeling with seals in Scotland and Sea Lions in California . But I never developed any interaction with the animals. But with the sea lions of Los Islotes it should be different. It is said that the curious young animals even play with the divers and snorkelers or their equipment! I could hardly wait to get into the water.

While we prepared our equipment for diving, we could see and hear the sea lions from the boat. They lay on the rocks and sunbathed themselves or watched us from the water. There were already several other diving and snorkeling boats, but under water we didn't notice anything of the other groups. First the dive started relatively unspectacular. We dived in 8 to 10 meters depth along the rocks. From time to time a sea lion shot past us, otherwise there was not much to see. 

Curious and playful - the young Sea Lions

The sea lions still kept their distance from us. But that changed after 10 minutes. At first I observed how a sea lion suddenly hung on the diving bottle of a fellow diver. Then other animals swam between the divers, one came directly towards me. What happened in the following minutes, I still can't really believe until today. This young sea lion clung to my legs or arms with his two fins. Meanwhile he snapped at my equipment. I just hoped he wouldn't bite too hard and damage something. Sometimes I pushed him away, but this only made him more curious. I was not wearing gloves and could feel his fur. It reminded me of a wet dog.

Rules for Diving and Snorkeling with the Sea Lions of La Paz

• Always be calm when a sea lion comes towards you
• Not to hold or hunt animals
• Do not stretch out your fingers, do not feed
• Keep your distance from the rocks on the surface, because there are also the more territorial adult males. take the males' warnings (barking and violent expulsion of air bubbles) seriously
• If one of the adult males is in the water, you have to keep your distance

There are numerous agencies that offer snorkeling or diving trips to the sea lions. In the following I have selected three agencies for comparison. We ourselves had two great days with Dive in La Paz and can warmly recommend the team. We booked our two diving days in advance by email and secured our place with a 10% deposit.

At which Time of the Year it is possible to dive with the Sea Lions of La Paz?

The Los Islotes dive site is located in a protected bay and is also suitable for beginners. But even if the sea lions are here all year round, it is important to have the right timing: Because the sea lion colony is closed for divers and snorkelers during the breeding season from June to August. Every year about 70 young animals are born.

How long does a Tour take?

The drive to Los Islotes takes about 90 minutes. The whole day program (2-tank-dives) takes about 6 hours.

What you shouldn't forget to pack:

• The sea lions are getting very close. With a wide angle lens or wide angle setting on your action camera you are well served here. Unfortunately I didn't have one with me.
• Use reef friendly sunscreen, e.g. from Eco Cosmetics or Speik. You can find an interesting article about the reef-damaging effects of sunscreen at Indojunkie.
• Take a refillable water bottle with you.
• A towel and something warm and windproof for the return trip .

Facts about Californian Sea Lions

The Californian sea lions are found on the east coast of the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to the Galapagos Islands. Since 1994 they are a protected species in Mexico.

• Diving depth: up to 100 m
• Diving time: up to 20 minutes
• Food: fish, crabs
• Enemies: sharks, orcas
• Age: 12 to 15 years

The neighbouring Island Isla Espíritu Santo - most beautiful Island of the Sea of Cortez

Also the Isla Espíritu Santo is worth seeing and also a popular destination for excursions. It is about 32 kilometres away from La Paz and a popular place for excursions. With its yellow-red rocks, white bays and turquoise water it is said to be the most beautiful island in the Sea of Cortez. It measures 24 x 8 km, is barren, rocky and overgrown with cacti. Since 1995 it has been protected as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The CONAP (Comisión Nacional de Àreas Naturales Protegidas) is responsible for the protection of the "Espiritu Santo National Park".

During our day trip to the whale sharks and sea lions we spent our lunch break in one of the beautiful bays of Isla Espíritu Santo.

My first Whale Shark - a lasting Memory

Carefully I glide from the side of the ship into the water. At first sight the visibility under the water surface is zero. Then I recognize several bright spots in front of me. Probably small fish. Seeking advice I look to the left to our guide to find out in which direction I should swim. "It's right in front of you..." Unbelievingly I turn my gaze back into the water. In front of my eyes the bright spots from before form a pattern. I recognize outlines and the outlines become fins. The whale shark swims almost vertically in front of me in the water. Eating it opens and closes its mouth. It turns and comes slowly towards me. My small underwater camera is already running and captures this moment. My first encounter with one of these fascinating giants is accompanied by a surprised, gurgling sound.

We were lucky. Because on this day there were 15 animals in the snorkeling zone. As there was a lot of plankton in the water, the whale sharks were busy eating. Then they often stand almost vertically in the water and only move forward slowly feeding. Two days later I went snorkeling again. There the situation was different. The water was a bit clearer but there were fewer whale sharks to be seen. The animals we saw were eating while swimming. Even though they were not swimming very fast, it became more sportive for me as a snorkeler.

The Whale Shark - Whale or Shark?

As big as a whale, but still a shark. With an average body length of 12 meters, whale sharks are the largest fish in our seas. But it's not only the size that reminds us of a whale. Like many whales, the whale shark feeds on plankton. It can suck in up to 6,000 liters of water per hour. Instead of baleen whales, however, it uses a special sponge-like filter apparatus that is stretched in front of its gills. It also has about 3000 teeth, which are arranged in more than 300 rows close together. A fish of superlatives! And it is not only the largest fish with an unbelievable number of teeth, but also a real pachyderm: at 15 cm it has the thickest skin of all living creatures.

Whale sharks give birth to up to 300 living young. The young hatch from the eggs while they are still in the womb. The time of birth can be controlled by the female. The newborn whale sharks are only about 60 centimeters long.

Whale sharks are found in all tropical and subtropical seas with water temperatures between 21°C and 25°C. They are most commonly found where the water is rich in plankton, krill and fish larvae. They often follow seasonal fluctuations in food supply and can therefore only be observed at certain times in many places.

Endangerment and Protection of the Whale Sharks

Since 2016, the whale shark has been on the IUCN Red List. It is classified as endangered. Nevertheless, it is still hunted in many countries. Apart from fishing, oil drilling, aquaculture and shipping are the main threats. The whale sharks also frequently come to feed in the shallow coastal areas rich in plankton. There, however, they are particularly exposed to heavy shipping traffic. In addition, they are increasingly affected by marine pollution, especially plastic waste. This is because they filter it out of the water together with their food. But also unregulated and reckless tourism (excursion boats and snorkeling tours) can put the whale sharks under stress and endanger them.

The bay of La Paz is characterized by its abundance of fish and its biodiversity. Every year between October and April, the water here is also very rich in plankton and attracts whale sharks. Many tour operators have found a source of income in this area.

In addition, since 2003 there is a whale shark monitoring program in the bay of La Paz. It shows that it is mostly younger animals with 6 to 9 meters length that come here to feed. In 2019 a total of 105 different sharks were identified based on their unique pattern on their backs. However, data from recent years also show that up to 66% of the animals have injuries from boats.

To protect the whale sharks, rules for whale shark tourism have been established and the tour operators have been trained since 2009. Finally, in 2018 a sanctuary for the whale sharks was established in the bay of La Paz.

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks off La Paz - Overview and Tips

An underwater encounter with a whale shark is certainly one of the most exciting experiences one could wish for when snorkeling. Here I will tell you my tips for this unique nature experience:

• Season: 1 October to 30 April
• Water temperature: 26°C in October to 15°C in February
• Visibility range: 20 m to 10 m. The best visibility is in October and November.
• Costs: 70 to 100 US dollars. The national park fee (US$7) is included. For this you will get a green ribbon around your wrist.
• Duration: about 3 hours. Since only 14 boats are allowed in the reserve at the same time, there may be waiting times. Therefore, don't make any plans for the time after that. The boat trip to the reserve takes about 20 minutes. Meanwhile you have time to put on your wetsuit and prepare your equipment / camera.
• Snorkeling equipment can be rented. However, there are big differences: Some rent only thin wetsuits, others 7mm wetsuits.
• Most boats offer snacks and drinks . Take a refillable water bottle with you.
• A towel and something warm and windproof for the return trip .

How to find a Tour Agency

Try to find out how big the group is before booking a tour. The smaller the group the better. Because the snorkelers are divided into groups of five people each. This can result in longer waiting times on board and fewer snorkeling trips. On my second snorkeling trip we were 17 people on board and were divided into 4 groups. Each group could only go in the water twice. On my first trip, however, we were only 8 people and were in the water five times.

Some agencys have combined tours in their program where you go to the sea lion colony afterwards . For example, with Dive in La Paz you can first snorkel with the whale sharks and then dive or snorkel with the sea lions (US$ 155; only whale sharks US$ 90).

Very special excursions are offered by the research organization Whale Shark Mexico . Here you can actively support the monitoring of these fascinating animals as part of a “Citizen Science Programms” . All the data collected will help in the conservation and management of the whale sharks off La Paz. The research trips are conducted in small groups of up to 6 people and cost 90 US dollars.

Rules for Snorkeling with Whale Sharks off La Paz

The activities with the whale sharks off La Paz are strictly regulated and controlled. Because only with sustainable ecotourism can the population of whale sharks off La Paz remain stable in the future. Therefore, rules have also been established for snorkeling:

• Listen to your guide's instructions.
• Only snorkeling is allowed, no diving or free diving.
• Use reef friendly sunscreen, e.g. from Eco Cosmetics or Speik. You can find an interesting article about the reef-damaging effects of sunscreen at Indojunkie. Rashguards with UV protection are also a good alternative to sunscreen.
• Keep a distance of at least 2 metres and do not swim in front of the whale shark's mouth.
• Do not touch!
• Do not use flash or video light when taking pictures / filming.
• A maximum of one boat and five snorkelers + guide per whale shark is allowed. If you are travelling with a larger boat, you will be divided into several groups which will go into the water one after the other.
• A maximum of 14 boats are allowed in the reserve at any one time.

Rendezvous with Bull Sharks

The plane from Los Angeles to San Cabo in Mexico is overbooked. Two volunteers are to be rewarded with no less than 900 dollars each for rebooking their flight for the following day. A tempting sum. But the time we can spend in Baja California Sur is already short anyway. And on top of that I have a very special date there.

But when we arrive at the dive center we are disillusioned: The dive spot "El Vencedor" is closed. Because of conservation reasons, only 72 divers are allowed per week at the wreck. And this is THE spot to see bull sharks in Cabo Pulmo.

Not only at the wreck "El Vencedor", but also at all other dive spots in the national park, the number of divers is limited. Furthermore, the number of dive boats present at each spot is limited. Furthermore, time slots are assigned to the boats. For this reason, the planned dive destinations are only released by the National Park Administration before each trip. This has the advantage that you will never find crowded dive spots in Cabo Pulmo. The disadvantage, however, is that you only find out shortly before the dive if the desired dives will work out.

Leo, our guide from Cabo Pulmo Watersports, our fellow divers Farheen and her partner, and James and I get ready for our 2-tank dive. We do not know at this moment where we want to go. The bigger the surprise is soon after. "Do you want to go to the bull sharks?" Leo asks us with a grin. So "El Vencedor" was open after all and is now the destination for our second dive of the day.

I can not believe our luck, I hope with all my heart that the bull sharks will show up.

Dark Shadows and close Encounters at "El Vencedor

Already while diving down to the wreck lying in about 13 meters depth, I see a dark shadow under me. It is quite big. At the sides two pectoral fins stand out. My heart is beating, and I notice how my senses are sharpened. They are actually there! The bull sharks of Cabo Pulmo!

Next to the wreck - not much is left - the bottom is sandy. We sit on the sandy bottom, keep calm, wait and watch. On our left, a shoal of yellow striped mullet is standing in the light current. The visibility is rather moderate with about 10 meters. But it doesn't take long until we can see the outline of the first shark in front of us. It continues to approach, only to disappear from view again immediately afterwards. I look around carefully so that I don't miss anything. The idea that a bull shark could approach unnoticed from behind gives me a slightly queasy feeling in my stomach.

But unlike me, the sharks seem to already know about encounters between humans and sharks. They are not impressed by us. They calmly circle around the wreck. I am slowly getting calmer and am happy that the sharks are always coming closer. The mighty animals swim up to about three meters towards us. For a moment, I can even spot three sharks at once.

What an experience! I will never forget this dive for the rest of my life. Because this encounter has redefined my image of sharks. And it has ignited my desire for further shark dives. This encounter left me with a deep feeling of respect and an even deeper feeling of love.

Shark Diving in Cabo Pulmo National Park, Mexico

In the National Park Cabo Pulmo , you can see different kinds of sharks with a little luck. Some of them live here all year round, others are only seen occasionally. We had some luck and saw besides the bull sharks also a whitetip reef shark.

Bull sharks stay in Cabo Pulmo all year round. Depending on the time of year you dive, you can watch the sharks mating, resting or hunting. The sharks can be found at different dive sites in the national park. However, the wreck "El Vencedor" is the spot with the highest probability of sightings. During the winter season from December to April it is also possible to see the animals from the boat. Because then they come in large numbers close to the flat coast.

In the waters of Cabo Pulmo there is more than enough natural food for the sharks thanks to the fishing ban. All shark feeding is prohibited in the entire national park. The bull sharks therefore do not associate divers with food. They are relaxed and slightly curious.

Shark Diving - the Pros and Cons

The dive with the bull sharks in Mexico caused a lot of different emotions in me. First of all there is the fascination for the animals and a deep respect. But right next to the respect there is also a spark of fear. Most of the time this is overlaid by curiosity, a thirst for adventure and the desire for special nature experiences. But while I was reading more about the bull sharks of Cabo Pulmo and shark diving, questions arose in my head that demanded answers:

What are the differences in shark diving?
How safe is shark diving?
What is the controversial subject of shark feeding?
What are the general tips for shark diving?

What are the differences in shark diving?

Shark dive operators are easy to find on the internet these days. Different types of dives can be distinguished:

• Natural shark encounters at regional or seasonal shark collections
• Provoked Shark Encounters with fed sharks (with open or closed bait)

For the Natural Shark Encounters, you need a bit of luck and maybe a second or third try until you see a shark. You will be rewarded with an authentic nature experience. You will experience the shark in its natural behaviour. This is the most tolerable, respectful and safe way to conduct a shark dive.

In many diving areas, however, shark encounters are only made possible by feeding. A distinction must be made between feeding with open and closed baits. Closed means that the bait is in a box and the shark is only attracted by the smell. With open bait the fish pieces swim freely in the water. So with the so called "chumming" sharks are lured in front of the camera lens. The chances of a close encounter with a shark and an adrenaline-fuelled nature experience increase up to 100%. Business with sharks is booming and becoming more and more popular. However, the topic of shark feeding is highly controversial and involves risks.

How safe is shark diving?

Accidents with sharks happen. They are listed in the International Shark Attack Files of the Florida Museum of Natural History. For 2018, 66 "unprovoked" and 34 "provoked" attacks were reported worldwide. Five of the attacks were fatal, including one provoked attack. Of the attacks, 5% were targeted at divers, 6% at snorkelers and freedivers. The figures for 2018 are below the five-year average. Sharks are not aggressive by nature. How else would it be possible to see pictures of divers with big sharks again and again? Apparently not every diver is bitten or eaten by the shark. This is also confirmed by the relatively low number of "unprovoked" shark attacks. However, there is a risk that the body size of humans is the same as that of prey of larger sharks. Since sharks have no possibility to analyse a diver more precisely, they cannot exclude us as prey. If the inhibition threshold of the normally rather shy animal is low enough at the same time, a "test bite" can occur. Because only through the sense of taste can the shark determine whether a diver is a possible prey or not.

However, the biggest risk factor in shark dives are human beings. This is because by frequently feeding the sharks, humans provoke a change in their behaviour: they come closer, compete for food and possibly regard divers as food competitors. Sharks often push and jostle divers. A wrong behaviour can quickly lead to a dangerous situation. In addition, sharks will associate divers with food in the future. What if such an animal develops expectations?

What is the controversial subject of shark feeding?

The development of shark feeding to promote shark tourism is hotly debated and seen ambivalently.
One opinion is: Shark feedings promote shark protection.
Another opinion is: Shark feeding changes the natural behaviour of the animal and can provoke accidents.

Shark feeding brings diving guests and they bring the money. A lot of money! 80 million dollars per year in the Bahamas alone. And where sharks become a lucrative, long-term source of income, the risk of them ending up on your plate or in your soup pot is reduced. With their underwater photos and adventure stories the diving guests advertise the sharks and help the animals to get a new image. At least as long as nothing happens!

I have decided that I will only participate in shark dives where the sharks are not fed. I would like to experience these majestic animals as naturally as possible. And there are enough regional or seasonal shark collections where encounters are possible. For me, a provoked shark encounter is no longer an authentic nature experience, but rather a risky circus spectacle to satisfy the diver's ego (science and professional camera work excluded).

Tips for your Shark Dive for more Safety

To make your shark dive as safe as possible, you should follow a few rules:

• Find out about the dive, local conditions and sharks in advance.
• Breathe calmly, quietly and regularly.
• Avoid fast, hectic movements. If the shark comes too close, take a vertical position. Do not swim away! This could be interpreted as easy prey.
• Shark dives require calm and controlled behaviour. This applies to breathing, buoyancy and all movements, including handling the camera. Shark dives are therefore rather something for experienced divers.
• Wear dark colors. Avoids strong contrasts and flashing equipment (confusion with loose scales of an injured fish).
• Try to keep present animals in view. If a shark circles you, turn with calm movements. This will help you to recognize changes in behavior more quickly or to balance any bumping into the shark.
• If you approach the shark from the side, do not appear directly above it. Make sure that there is a minimum distance of two body lengths. Do not harass the animal, especially in caves or wrecks.
• Make it look like schooling fish and use group safety. Especially when feeding on sharks.
• Never stand between shark and its potential prey or in the current area of the bait. Avoid fishing spots and the proximity of spearfishers.
• In shark-rich waters, it is better not to dive at dusk or in poor visibility conditions.
• Sometimes sharks show great interest for camera equipment. Because they can sense the electrical voltage of the equipment. If a shark gets too intrusive, better switch off your camera.
• Do not flash directly into the shark's eyes.
• Follow the instructions of the dive guide and don't get cocky. Any imprudent behaviour while shark diving is negligent and can quickly lead to a dangerous situation.  
• Last but not least: If you are not comfortable with the conditions of the planned shark dive - drop the dive! There will certainly be another opportunity for a great shark dive.

Bull Sharks - feared, hunted, protected and loved

The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) or also common ground shark owes its name to its brawny physique. It appears strong and stocky and has a relatively broad snout. An important distinguishing feature, apart from its body type, is its almost right-angled dorsal fin and the lack of an interdorsal ridge between the front and rear dorsal fins. His eyes are comparatively small and appear rigid.

Bull sharks live in warmer coastal waters of the tropics and subtropics. It occurs in all seas except the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. It likes to stay close to the bottom over sandy ground and in murky waters. It is particularly common in shallow water near the shore and in the estuary of rivers. Bull sharks often penetrate rivers or even lakes. This is because, unlike other sharks, they are capable of regulating osmosis. This means they can adapt their metabolism for life in fresh water.

Bull sharks hunt day and night. They feed on fish, crabs, turtles and molluscs. It even eats other sharks and, if need be, even conspecifics. Humans are usually not on its menu. Nevertheless, the bull shark is one of the shark species that can also be dangerous to humans. Together with the tiger shark and the great white shark, it is one of the three most dangerous shark species.

More than 70 shark species are already on the IUCN Red List. The bull shark is also on the list. It is not threatened with extinction and is considered "only" to be at low risk (NT, Near Threatened). It is endangered by commercial fishing and sport fishing, because it can unfortunately continue to be hunted. Since the bull shark is often found in coastal waters, it is also an easy prey. Sharks also often die as by-catch in fishing nets.

Keep your eyes open when you buy fish. Do not buy "fantasy fish". Shark products are hidden behind the names "Schillerlocken", "Seeaal", "Kalbsfisch", "Seestör", "Karbonadenfisch" and "Königsaal" . Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics may also contain shark products, such as shark cartilage (collagen) or liver oil (squalene).

Shark fins are considered a "delicacy" in many countries. Live sharks are often cut off the fins. The mutilated animals are then disposed of as waste overboard and are delivered to an agonizing death.

Sightseeing under Water

In La Jolla you can experience the best that California's underwater world has to offer while snorkeling. Because it is home to an incredible variety of sea creatures and you have perfect conditions to observe them up close. You can also snorkel along the massive cliffs and explore the ancient sea caves. You can either discover the underwater world on your own or take part in a guided snorkeling tour.Most companies offer these tours between March and October. You can even combine your snorkelling tour with a paddle tour on a sit-on-top kajak. Again, there is the opportunity to do this on your own or with a guided tour. Tour operators are for example Scuba San Diego, Everyday California or Scubadivergirls.

La Jolla Underwater Park was founded in 1970 by the city of San Diego and includes both the Ecological Reserve and the Marine Life Refuge. This 6,000 hectare Underwater Park is one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems in the world and is perfect for snorkeling and diving. Another important plus for snorkelling in La Jolla is that it is a restricted area for boats and surfers. There's no danger of you being run over as a snorkeler here. You can see the most beautiful snorkeling spots on the Hiking map .

Alone or with a guided Tour?

I went on a discovery tour on my own. This is cheaper and it is much nicer to do it at your own speed. There are also maps that show the best snorkeling spots. I borrowed missing equipment from a shop in La Jolla. I started my snorkeling tour on the beach at La Jolla Cove, then snorkeled past the sea caves and went ashore again at the beach "Shark City". That was a longer tour of about 90 minutes and I was glad that my wetsuit warmed me up. Afterwards I walked back in my wetsuit to La Jolla Cove. Partly at the road, partly the "Sea lions path". By the way, it's not uncommon for people in wetsuits to walk along the streets. I was thought to be a local and asked for the way to the Cove Store.

Advantages of a guided tour:

• The group offers snorkeling beginners safety, there is also a briefing at the beginning
• The guide knows where the most beautiful snorkeling spots in La Jolla are and can give you more tips.
• The equipment is provided. Some providers even allow you to keep the equipment for the rest of the day (just ask).

Disadvantages of a guided tour:

• Cost between 60 and 80 euros
• Group size diminishes the nature experience and you do not have the opportunity to snorkel at your own pace.

Tip: In summer, always Saturdays, the San Diego Council of Divers also offers various snorkeling tours. These tours are open to everyone and completely free of charge.

Before you go into the Water - Checklist

Behind the lifeguard's stand in La Jolla Cove there is a large board with information about the water temperature and the waves. If the swell is more than 3 feet (about 1 meter) it is better not to snorkel into the sea caves. As you approach the rocks of the cave, you'll notice how hard the waves push you back and forth. Blue spots and possibly abrasions would be preprogrammed.

In the morning the waves are usually smaller than in the afternoon or evening. So it's best to start your snorkeling tour early. The best time for snorkeling is between 10 and 14 o'clock, because then the sun is high enough and you have more light under water.

Checklist

• Complete equipment? (Neoprene, boots, fins, mask, snorkel, possibly hood, gloves, lead belt)
• Waterproof camera with you? Battery charged?
• Valuables safely stored? Leave it in your car or hotel. Alternatively, take it with you in a waterproof bag and tie it to your arm.
• Wave height / weather report checked?
• Is it low tide or high tide? This is important to know if you want to go through the shell cave, for example.
• If the conditions are good and you want to snorkel into the caves, take a waterproof torch with you.

The Sea Caves La Jolla Caves

To the right of the sandy beach La Jolla Cove are the sea caves of La Jolla. There are a total of seven caves, which were cut by the tides and waves here in the approximately 60 -meter-high sandstone cliff. From West to East they are known as: Clam's Cave, Sunny Jim Sea Cave, Arch Cave, Sea Surprise, Shopping Cart, Little Sister and White Lady.

You can snorkel beneath the sandstone cliff and explore the La Jolla Sea caves. In good conditions and with little waves you can even snorkel in some. Some you can explore on foot afterwards. The easiest way to get to the caves is La Jolla Cove beach. There should also be more access from the rocks, but there you have to climb with your snorkeling gear. I did not try these approaches. 

From the beach La Jolla Cove you get to the Clam’s Cave after about five minutes of snorkeling. It is the largest of the seven caves and is even visible from the Coast Boulevard. If the tide permits, you can snorkel or even paddle through the cave.

The other caves can only be seen from the water. Some of them are associated with old stories and legends. For example, it is said about the cave White Lady that here a woman was seized by the flood and washed into the water.

If you can not get into the caves because of the waves, you can still visit one of the sea caves by land. The Sunny Jim Sea Cave was opened in 1902 through an artificial tunnel with 145 steps.The construction of the tunnel lasted two years and was initiated by the German Professor Gustav Schulz. It has since become the only sea cave in La Jolla that can be reached by land. The entrance to the tunnel is in the Cave Store, the oldest shop in La Jolla. Around the Sunny Jim Sea Cave are stories about smugglers of alcohol, opium and immigrants from Asia. The entrance fee is $ 5. The entry into the water is not allowed from the observation deck of the cave, but you can explore the cave from the water and snorkel into it.

Leopard Sharks in "Shark City"

In summer, thousands of leopard sharks (also called zebra sharks) arrive in the waters off La Jolla. Most of the animals are pregnant females giving birth to their young here. Because here in the shallow warm waters is the nursery of the sharks.The leopard sharks like to lie close to the ground on the sand and can already be seen from above when swimming or kayaking. Right behind the waves breaking on the beach you can see the first animals.

Especially many leopard sharks gather in front of La Jolla in „Shark City“.. Das ist der Strandabschnitt La Jolla Shores nördlich des Restaurants “The Marine Room”. Hier ist auch die Einsatzstelle für Kajaks.

The best season to see the sharks of La Jolla is from the beginning of June to the end of September.During the rest of the year there are about 100-200 leopard sharks that live here all year round.

You can easily spot the leopard sharks: On silver skin are drawn about 13 saddle-shaped bands over the back. They run over the entire length of the shark. Besides the leopard sharks in La Jolla can also see other shark species. These are corn sharks. Furthermore, there are stingrays that like to bury themselves in the sand. So watch out where you step.

The waves are a bit higher at the La Jolla Shores than at the protected La Jolla Cove. This means that just in the surf zone a lot of sand is whirled up and the visibility is slightly worse. The sharks you see in this case only when they are close to you.

The sharks of La Jolla are harmless. However, they are wild animals and you should bring appropriate respect and caution. Do not chase after the sharks and do not surround them. Do not even try to touch them or capture them for a photo (sounds unbelievable, but unfortunately I've been seriously suggested by a dive guide in La Jolla).

Facts about Leopard Sharks

• Length: up to 2 meters
• Weight: up to 18.4 kg
• Distribution: Eastern Pacific from Oregon to the Gulf of California
• Diet: Mussels, crabs, shrimp, squid and fish eggs.
• Reproduction: each female produces between 7 and 36 offspring per breeding season, which measure about 20 centimeters at birth.
• Age: up to 30 years
• Status in the IUCN Red List: Least Concern. Unfortunately, those sharks are kept a lot in aquariums and are also fished and eaten.

Tip: The Scripps Aquarium also offers guided snorkeling tours to the leopard sharks from July to September. The tours are led by trained naturalists and are therefore a great opportunity to learn more about the sharks.

Sea Lions in La Jolla Cove

The beach at La Jolla Cove is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in La Jolla. This bay is protected by high cliffs. This reduces the surf and improves visibility underwater. The bay is also popular with sea lions. The sea lions like to rest on the rocks that frame the bay on the right and on the left. And mostly some of them are in the water. Then you have the possibility to experience sea lions under water. They seem so clumsy and awkward on land. But under water they are fast and elegant. It is a real pleasure to observe the animals.

Kelp Forest

The California underwater world is known for its kelp forests. Snorkeling or diving in kelp is like experiencing the fourth dimension. It is especially nice to dive through the plants with scuba equipment. Personally, I found it even more beautiful than the colorful reefs in Egypt. And even as a snorkeler it is a great experience to see these gigantic forests from above.

Giant tangle grows in cold water where rocks are found on the seabed. There, the kelp is not rooted like other plants. Instead, he uses a kind of root structure that holds him to the rocks at depths between 12-25 meters. The plants grow up to 45 meters high and often reach the water surface. Air filled floats raise the tang and hold it up. Kelp grows up to 60 centimeters every day, preferably in the cooler winter months and when it gets a lot of sun.

Garibaldi Fish

Every state of the United States has a state fish. These animal species are considered federal landmarks. The pretty orange Garibaldi fish is the State fish of California.It is found throughout the California coast and is hard to miss because of its color. Its color is particularly beautiful up to about three meters deep. Because here the red light is not so much swallowed by the water. You can see it everywhere at the snorkeling spots off La Jolla. But most often I have seen it in La Jolla Cove and on the rocky sections in front of the sea caves.

The Garibaldi fish is with up to 30 centimeters the largest species of reef perch and is protected in the USA. It lives in the cool waters of the kelp forests and on the rocky coasts of the eastern Pacific from Monterey to Lower California at depths of up to 30 metres.

In addition to the orange Garibaldi you can still sardines, stingrays, octopus, California toothpipes, yellow tails and other fish or, with luck, even discover turtles. You also have a good chance of seeing lobsters, crabs and lobsters.

Tips for the equipment for snorkeling in La Jolla

A wetsuit protects you from hypothermia and scuffs from involuntary contact with the numerous rocks. In addition, you get additional lift through the suit and can therefore snorkel longer and more relaxed. In summer, a 3 mm suit is sufficient. In autumn to spring you are well supplied with a 7 mm suit. However, then you have so much buoyancy that you should eventually wear a lead belt with 2 kg weight.

You can borrow missing equipment in one of the snorkelling shops in La Jolla, for example at Everyday California or La Jolla Kayak.

La Jolla Cove is the only stretch of beach in San Diego where swimming aids may not be used. The bay is designated as a bathing, snorkeling and diving area. The use of life jackets, boogie boards or other swimming equipment is not permitted.

La Jolla is a district in the north of San Diego. Coming from Los Angeles, you can reach La Jolla in about 2.5 hours via Freeway 5.Follow La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road to Prospect Street and La Jolla Coast Boulevard. Parking is best right in front of the beach on La Jolla Coast Boulevard. Parking time is limited to 2 or 3 hours. You can also park at Prospect Street, Girard Street or one of the public parking lots.

By public transport you can travel from Los Angeles Union Station to San Diego Old Town by Pacific Surfliner 2 hours 45 minutes. From here, take bus number 30 to La Jolla and get off at Torrey Pines Road & Exchange Place for about 50 minutes. The last 800 metres to the beach are on foot.

During my stay in La Jolla I had booked into the hotel La Jolla Suit. The hotel was directly opposite the La Jolla Cove. Due to the location the hotel was a bit more expensive, but it had the following decisive advantages:

• The path to snorkelling and the best sea lion observation points was not far and I did not have to carry my equipment far.
• I did not have to worry about parking.
• I was able to leave all my valuables in the hotel during my snorkeling trips.
• After snorkelling I could go back to my room as I was and immediately take a warm shower.

So the closer the hotel is to the beach, the better.

time of day

The best time to snorkel in La Jolla is between 10 am and 2 pm. When the sun is higher the fish are more visible and the colours under water are more vivid. In the afternoon there is usually more wind and the water can become more turbulent.

The Colours

Under water, the red tones become less and less visible with increasing depth. Green and blue tones dominate. A magenta filter, which you place in front of the lens of your underwater camera, can help. If you don't have a filter, you can possibly set the white balance of your camera to "under water". Alternatively you can photograph in RAW format and then adjust the white balance during image editing.

Underwater Lamp or Flash

The more sunlight the water brightens up, the better you can see the individual colour spectra under water. If there's not enough sunshine or you're diving too deep, you can use an underwater lamp or underwater flash to restore the color variety.

Half-Half Shots

Now comes one of my favourite photo tips for underwater pictures of the sea lions: Especially beautiful are also so-called half-half shots. So photos, where the lower part of the picture is under water and the upper part is above water. It's not that easy to position the camera exactly during waves. The easiest way to do this is with a larger lens. With a small action camera it takes several attempts until it works. But what definitely works well with a small action camera is the imaging of reflections under the water surface.

Still Images from a Video

Fish or sea lions are damn fast underwater. Often faster than my own reaction speed. So in some of my pictures the animals were cut. Do you know that? To catch the fish and sea lions anyway, you can try the following: Make a video instead of single photos. Then you can create a still from the video. This is easy with the VLC Media Player:: Bis zu der gewünschten Stelle im Video navigieren, dann ein rechter Mausklick auf das Video, im sich öffnenden Fenster “Video” auswählen und dann “Videoschnappschuss” anklicken. Fertig. Inwieweit euch die Qualität des Standbildes aus dem Videos genügt müsst ihr einfach mal mit eurer Kamera ausprobieren.

What kinds of Pinnipeds can I see in La Jolla?

Both seals and sea lions live in La Jolla. seals als auch Sea LionsThey are easy to distinguish from each other: Sea lions have ears and strong, longer fins with which they can walk and climb. Seals, on the other hand, only have ear holes and move forward crawling on their belly. They only make quiet bordering sounds, while the sea lions bark loudly. So if you see seals on rocks, then these are most likely sea lions. A further distinguishing feature is the coat colour: sea lions are brown and seals are darker grey, brown or almost black with speckled coat.

Sea lions live densely packed in their colonies, lying above and below each other and touching each other. Seals, on the other hand, are not social animals and tend to react aggressively to contact by other seals. At the beach, they lie therefore mostly evenly distributed with approximately 1,5 meters of distance of each other. So you can already see from the way the seals are distributed on the beach which species they are.

Where are the best Places to see the Seals and Sea Lions of La Jolla?

Seals and sea lions can be seen all along the California coast. In La Jolla you have the best chance on the famous 1.6 km long "Sea lions path".This leads from the Cave Store on Coast Boulevard to the Children's Pool. Give enough time for the way and take your camera with you. Because along the way there are always great opportunities to take pictures of the animals. They frolic in the water, surf in the waves like dolphins, bask on the sand or fight each other.

The Rocks at the Sea Caves

The sea lions like to stay on the rocks near La Jolla Caves at the northern end of Coast Boulevard. Here you can watch them from the road and from the viewing rocks.

A little tip: if you are already here, then visit Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave.It is the only sea cave in San Diego that you can visit by land through a tunnel. Access is located in the Cave Store on Coast Boulevard. And maybe you are lucky and you expect some sea lions down in the cave.

La Jolla Cove

. La Jolla Cove is a small sheltered sandy bay surrounded by rocks. Sea lions like to lie on these rocks, resting or warming up in the sun. If the beach and water of La Jolla Cove is not overcrowded, sea lions like to play in the water or lie on the beach. In La Jolla Cove you also have the best opportunity to snorkel with sea lions. But more about that later.

Rocks between La Jolla Cove and Boomer Beach

If you walk south from La Jolla Cove along the coastal path you will come to a longer rocky stretch of shore. During my visit to La Jolla there were many sea lions here and it was the best place of all for observing the animals. They rested, sunbathed and the mother animals suckled their young. Here I spent about two hours watching the animals. It was interesting to see how they interacted with each other or moved back and forth between water and land.

The footpath is separated from the sea lion rocks by a small wall. But many people climb over the wall to get even closer to the sea lions. Often I could observe how people came much too close to the animals and how the bigger bulls started to attack.

Shell Beach

As soon as the coastal road winds to the east, you will come to an access point to Shell Beach. It takes its name from the tidal pools here. At low tide there are a lot of shells and other animals that are not visible at high tide.

In the evening the waves are usually higher here than in the morning. Shortly before sunset I could observe several sea lions playing in the waves. They rode the waves like dolphins, jumped out of the water and obviously had a lot of fun.

Children’s Pool

The sandy bay (Casa Beach) of Children's Pool is the most famous place for seals. The stone dam was built in 1931 thanks to a donation from Ellen Browning Scripps. It should protect the small bathing bay and provide a quiet area for children to swim and snorkel. But also the seals found this bay so interesting that they took it into their own hands. The sheltered beach at Children's Pool is the best place in La Jolla to see seals. At the other observation sites, especially on the rocks, you will mainly see sea lions.

While La Jolla Cove is open all year round, the beach at Children's Pool is closed from 15 December to 15 May. This is the puppy season and the newborn seal pups should be protected. But you can still watch the animals from the shore or from the dam and with a lot of luck you can even witness a birth. The rest of the year a rope is stretched over the beach. This should not be exceeded for the observation of the animals.

Seal Rock

If you don't see seals on the beach at Children's Pool, you might spot sea lions out on Seal Rock.

Observations from the Kayak

Another great way to see the seals and sea lions of La Jolla is from a kayak. You can either rent a kayak and go on your own or take part in a guided kayak tour.

Which Times are best for the Observation?

You can see seals and sea lions all year round and, if you are lucky, even have a birth. The best time for this is from early February to early March.

Most seals and sea lions will be seen from the end of April to the beginning of June. During the months of July, August and September, however, you will see fewer animals on the beach during the day. Because when it is hot and sunny, the animals leave the beach, usually every morning between 7:00 and 8:00 o'clock.

In the late afternoon or early evening they return. The sand is now cooled by the shadow or flood. At this time more and more seal heads appear in the water in front of the beach. This is a sign that they want to come ashore and rest. As long as people are on the beach or in the water, however, the animals will not dare to go to the beach. If you want to do the animals a favour, now would be a good time to leave the beach or withdraw a bit.

What should I watch out for when Observing the Animals?

The most important hint first: Keep your distance!

The seals and sea lions living in La Jolla are wild animals. Observing the animals in their natural habitat is an impressive experience that will be remembered. But this should always be done from a safe and respectful distance. So be fair to the animals, keep your distance and take a zoom lens with you for your camera.

However, many people get too close to the animals. They stand next to the animals to make a selfie or even try to attract them with food. Children are placed next to the sea lions for a photo or a whole group poses for a family photo with sea lions. Often the animals react to these approaches and avoid them. Other times bulls gallop at humans and vehemently defend their territory. This frightens some people, others seem rather amused. But what most people certainly don't realize is that mothers can even leave their puppies in case of disturbances .

Seals and sea lions must rest for at least 10 to 14 hours a day to restore their oxygen supply and body temperature. They do this either on the beach or on the rocks. The term "flushing" now describes the process by which a seal or sea lion is intentionally or unintentionally chased from the beach into the water by humans. This can seriously jeopardize the health and safety of the animal and is associated with a fine of 500 USD .

Last but not least: Please don't leave garbage on the beach of La Jolla and don't try to feed the animals.

Where and how can I snorkel with the Animals?

You can snorkel in La Jolla either on your own with the sea lions or at a guided snorkeling tour. The latter is recommended if you are not so sure about snorkeling. Another advantage of a guided tour is that you will be provided with the equipment.

Missing equipment can be hired on site.There are several shops with masks, snorkels, wetsuits and fins in stock.

Take an online photo course wetsuit is recommended as you will cool down quickly under water. And once you're in the water with the sea lions, you won't want to get out that quickly. A neoprene suit also protects you from abrasions. Because there are a lot of big stones and rocks in the shore area. The waves can quickly throw you against a stone. For this reason, gloves are also useful.

You have the best access to the water in the protected area of the La Jolla CoveSeals often come into the bay right up to the beach. If you're lucky, you can already experience the animals in their element here. It's fascinating how elegant and fast they move underwater. The La Jolla Cove is very suitable for snorkelling as it is relatively sheltered and monitored by lifeguards.

If there is no seal or sea lion in the bay then you can just wait a moment. Because often the animals appear quite suddenly. Or you can leave the bay to the left or right to the rocks.

Slightly more exposed are the beach accesses at the Shell Beach. Here you must first cross the surf zone. The seals love to play in the waves here. Due to the more exposed location and the waves, the visibility here is not quite as good as in La Jolla Cove.

What is there to consider when snorkeling?

The same applies first of all as for watching seals and sea lions: Keep your distance! Always remember, you are the visitors in their environment, not the other way round.

It is great fun to watch the young sea lions playing in the water. The best thing to do is simply drift in the water and watch the action around you. And that without getting too close to the animals or pushing them. Often they are curious and come closer on their own. Some should even start to inspect the equipment and nibble (luckily they didn't do it for me).

In any case: Do not touch! For all cuteness, there are still wild animals with sharp teeth.

The adult sea lions can give you a bit more respect. As I drifted in the water in front of me, one came swimming to me and pretended as if he wanted to grab me. Luckily he did not do it, but it was a shock. So keep your eyes open for the parent animals as they protect their young.

What Protection Status do the Seals and Sea Lions of La Jolla have?

The seals and sea lions were the main reason for me to visit La Jolla. But many other guests, residents as well as restaurant and hotel operators see the sea lions rather as a problem. They complain that the sea lions dispute the beach with the bathers, pollute the beach and the water with excrements, smell bad and bark too loudly. Demands for the expulsion of sea lions from La Jolla Cove have already been made. However, this is not so easy, as La Jolla has been an underwater park and an ecological reserve since 1929. This also includes the marine mammals that live here.

Furthermore, a disturbance of the natural behavior of the animals is seen as a violation of the Federal Act on the Protection of Marine Mammals.The seals and sea lions are also protected by state law and the San Diego City Law. Excited Waiting for the Basking shark

With the fins on our feet and the diving masks on, we sit tense on the side of the ship. Our field of vision is severely restricted by the masks. Shortly before a basking shark showed up. Five pairs of eyes try hard to spot the dorsal fin of the shark. In the wavy water this is quite difficult. The boat swings in the waves, I shiver in my wet wet wetsuit. Finally the water temperature of about 14°C takes its toll.

While I still try to attract the shark with my thoughts, our guidin** points to starboard. As if attracted by a magnet, all five pairs of eyes suddenly point in the same direction. At a distance of about twenty meters the dorsal fin cuts through the water. Our guide gives the start signal, I get air, press my underwater camera firmly against me and glide silently into the cold water. Now it has to go fast. I float as fast as I can towards the shark, always following the raised arm of our guide.

**I have the word "guidin" as a name for a female guide once picked up somewhere. Actually there is no word at all. But I like the word creation and I like to use it.

All good Things come in Threes

It's our third attempt to find the basking shark underwater. The first times we were not fast enough. So the shark passed us unseen or changed direction. Under water the visibility is about ten meters. Therefore, finding the shark is not so easy. However, it is just as difficult at the water surface. Because only if you are lifted up by a wave, there is a chance to discover the dorsal fin between the wave crests.

My eyes scan the surface of the water. Finally I see it. His dorsal fin is only about fifteen meters away. While my heart is beating faster and faster, I take my head under water.

Encounter under Water

I don't see anything at first. Then I get a fright. He is huge and comes straight at me. As if spellbound, I stare at the silhouette, which becomes bigger and clearer in front of me. My eyes don't want to let go of the shark anymore. I stretch my camera to the shark. Without looking at the display, I press the shutter button. At the same time he slowly pulls past me with his mouth closed. Overjoyed and still a bit paralyzed from what I just experienced, I drift in the water. To my left I see two other snorkelers and paddle towards them. I recognize our guide with a guest. She points in my direction and I waved both with a grin around my snorkel. Still indulging in the luck I need a while until I finally understand what she wants from me. So I turn my head to the right. Right next to me is the shark. Even closer than before.

Lasting Memory of the Basking Shark

The encounter with the basking shark was such an intense experience that I will probably never forget. After the second encounter I fell snorkeling in the water into the arms of our guide. I cheered and thanked her and the giant shark. My eyes were still wet with joy. Afterwards we were supplied on board with warm beverages and a few biscuits and made ourselves then on the way home.

About Finding Basking Sharks

Basking sharks can be seen in the waters of the Hebrides in summer, most probably in the months of July to early September. They then migrate south. As pure plankton eaters, they stay where the plankton is to eat. On quiet days this is on the surface of the water. On windy days, however, when the water is mixed, the plankton is more evenly distributed in the water body. As a result, sharks can also feed in deeper water. For this reason we did not see any sharks at the beginning of our snorkeling tour. But we hoped that the conditions would change after the change of tides. And so it was. In the afternoon we had more luck and found a giant shark eating at the surface. The animals are unmistakable because often three parts of the body emerge from the water at the same time: the tip of the tail fin, the dorsal fin and the tip of the nose.

And when is the best Time to see the Basking Sharks in Scotland?

Giant sharks migrate to the Scottish Hebridean Islands in spring. They follow the plankton bloom and the appearance of zooplankton, which feeds on phytoplankton. Between July and early September, the chances of seeing giant sharks are greatest. However, as they are wild animals, a successful encounter can never be guaranteed. It is therefore worth planning at least two or even three days for snorkeling with giant sharks in Scotland. Since the journey to the Isle of Coll is relatively costly, it would be a shame to return home without a shark sighting.

Basking Sharks - a few Facts

Biology

The basking shark is after the whale shark the second largest shark species. It is over ten meters long and weighs up to several tons. The mouth can be up to one meter wide and is lined with special bones with which it filters the plankton out of the water. It feeds exclusively on plankton.

The dorsal fin can grow to over a metre, but sometimes it tips over at the surface due to its weight and size.

Basking sharks have a very small brain, but a well-developed sense of smell. Their eyesight is poorly developed and is probably mainly used to recognize the light conditions and to avoid obstacles.

The liver is the largest organ and can account for up to a third of body weight. It contains an oil and is also used as a source of energy in times when food is scarce. In addition, it provides buoyancy in the water, as sharks do not have a swim bladder. Unfortunately, this oil was one of the reasons why the basking sharks were hunted extensively in former times. The shark liver oil obtained was then used in lamps, cosmetics, perfumes and lubricants.

With the basking sharks young animals develop first in an egg bag and are born afterwards alive. Per "birth" then up to six young giant sharks with a length of about 1.5 to 2 meters are born.

Nutrition and Migration

Around Scotland are some of the most nutritious cold waters in the world. Every year in spring there are explosive plankton blossoms. As a result, animal zooplankton also multiplies on a massive scale. Due to the rich food supply the giant sharks are attracted in spring. Thus also the most important migration of the giant sharks coincides with the first plankton bloom of the year. The highlight of the migration is in midsummer. Then numerous giant sharks can be observed feeding off the Scottish Hebrides. In September and October the sharks migrate south. Their migration route runs across the Atlantic to Newfoundland and towards the Bay of Biscay and the Azores.

Protection Status and Threats of Basking Sharks

Basking sharks are listed as 'endangered' on the IUCN Red List and are also listed as 'endangered' in the North-East Atlantic. In the meantime the sharks are protected in Great Britain. But in other countries the sharks are still hunted.

A further threat for basking sharks is the garbage floating in the sea and the microplasty. Because they filter this together with the zooplankton from the water. The plastic then fills their stomachs. In the worst case, the animals can starve to death with a full stomach.

In addition, the global warming affects the sharks: This is because the distribution of certain zooplankton species is shifting to the cooler north and there are fears that this will affect the distribution of the giant sharks and changes in migration patterns.
