Scotland Scotland is known as a paradise for hikers, scramblers and climbers. Here, climbing the so-called Munros, or Munro bagging, is practiced like a national sport. And as soon as the first snow falls in the mountains, Munro bagging continues with crampons and ice axes. But winter mountaineering in Scotland has to be learned and practiced. We took a closer look and participated in a Scottish Winter Mountaineering course in beautiful Glencoe. With crampons, ice axe and ropes we went high up and steep down. Scottish winter weather and breathtaking views included.

Caution: Many Munros require a bundle of special equipment and skills. Every winter, underprepared hikers and climbers experience nasty surprises, some with fatal outcomes. Scottish winter weather and snow and ice conditions should by no means be underestimated.

What are Munros?

Munro is the name given to all the mountains in Scotland that are higher than 3000 feet (914.4 m). They are named after Sir Hugh T. Munro, who surveyed and catalogued all the Munros in 1891. The highest of the 282 Munros is Ben Nevis at 1,345 m (3,000 ft).

Climbing the Munros requires stamina and sometimes technical skills. Those who have climbed all the Munros are held in high esteem by the Scots. For me, also anyone who can remember the Gaelic names of the Munros and pronounce them is held in high esteem.

First Steps to become a Scottish Winter Mountaineer

Crampons and ice axe

The ice axe and crampons are part of the winter mountaineer's equipment. However, it is not enough to just have them with you. You also have to know how to use them and be familiar with their use. First, however, we learned how to move on the snow slope even without crampons: always hit the lateral corners of the boots into the snow. Then our instructor Chris explained to us how to use the crampons and additionally stabilize ourselves with our trekking poles or ice axe and a trekking pole. We also learned how to climb on steps in the snow or hit some with our ice axe.

Braking with the ice axe

After learning how to walk, we moved on to falling. Braking with the ice axe after a fall is an extremely important skill. But unfortunately it doesn't work instinctively and there is also the risk of hurting yourself with the ice axe or crampons. On a gently descending slope, we practiced braking in every imaginable scenario: head first, feet first, on our backs, on our stomachs, and everything in between.

Snow anchors, roping up, belaying and abseiling

The next few days we learned knots and worked with ropes, slings and rappels. We built anchors with an ice axe buried in the snow, sat in snow holes to belay our climbing partners, or rappelled down using snow anchors. Later, we also used rocks for rappelling and belaying and moved alpine style over mixed terrain.

Snow and avalanche awareness

In winter mountaineering, snow and avalanche awareness must be considered. This was taken into account first by theory lessons in the evening and the following day with a detailed examination of the snow layers and strength.

Scottisch Winter Grades

There are different systems for grading the difficulty of a mountain route. Why does one need different ones? Well, they are adapted to the local climbing conditions. Here you can find an overview of the different scales.

Scottish winter grades apply to ice and mixed conditions. Roman numerals I through IX represent the overall grade, Arabic numerals the technical grade of the most difficult section. Our beginner course was limited to grades I and II.

• Grade I: Easy ascents, snow gullies and ridges. The snow slopes are steep up to 50 degrees. One ice axe is sufficient.
• Grade II: There are steeper sections with ice, which are mostly passable with an ice axe and have only minor technical difficulties. Sometimes two ice axes are required.

Never trust the Scottish Weather!

Winter mountaineering in Scotland promises incredibly beautiful snowy landscapes and, at best, great views and blue skies. But the weather in Scotland is unpredictable. Storm and rain or even a white-out with zero visibility must always be expected. On one summit, as well as while rappelling down a snow slope, it nearly blew me away.

If you go to the Scottish mountains in winter, you have to be prepared for the worst of the weather and choose your equipment accordingly. On the evening before the first day of the course, Chris checked our equipment and explained exactly what we should take with us or rather leave at the hotel. Everything according to the motto: As little as possible, as much as necessary.

The season of Scottish Winter Mountaineering can stretch from October to April. But the actual length of the season is difficult to predict. There are no set dates, it just depends on the climbing areas being snowy and in good condition. Most courses in Scotland take place from January to March.

Tips for the equipment

• It is important to be prepared for emergencies: an emergency bivy sack*, a well-packed outdoor First aid kitincluding a warming blanket, an extra insulating jacket, a whistle*
• Indispensable are a reliable waterproof rain jacket and rain pants. If you are unlucky, it can rain all day. However, keep in mind that your rain gear can be damaged by handling the ice axe and crampons.
• Tip: Duct Tape*will tape anything, including torn rain jackets.
• Insulation jackets with Primaloft fill are better than down jackets in the expected wet weather. My favorite jacket has been the Arcteryx Atom*for years now. Even after 10 years of use it is still in good shape.
• Don't forget the rain cover for the backpack or pack everything in the backpack in waterproof bags*.
• Be prepared for the worst in terms of weather and be prepared for rapid weather changes. Take enough clothes with you to dress in the "onion layer principle" on site.
• Don't forget sunglasses and ski goggles. I have had good experiences with Julbo Reactive* , as the lenses adjust their brightness to the weather.
• Sturdy trekking poles, such as the Leki Sherpa XTG*, are essential for the course.
• A sip of hot tea on a cold day awakens new strength. It stays warm, for example, in the thermos flask from Esbit*. It even has two cups.

These were just a few things, the list is by no means complete. To ensure that nothing would be forgotten, Adventure Peaks gave us an extra packing list for the course.

We were able to rent the special mountaineering equipment on site. That was the climbing harness, carabiners, slings, rappelling gear, helmet, ice axe, crampons and crampon proof mountain boots (e.g. the La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX*).

And what about the camera?

I have carried my camera up the peaks of Mount Kenya and Illinizas Norte, which are about 5000 meters high. Even in the paddle boat or while trail riding, it's always handy. But here, on the Scottisch Winter Mountaineering, I left it in the hotel with a heavy heart. First, because I expected to always have my hands full during training (it was). Second, because it rained so hard for at least the first two days that I might not have unpacked them at all. I took pictures with my phone, a Huawei P40 pro, instead. I also got some more photos from my partner and from our instructor, which I was allowed to use here. Thanks again for that.

Conclusion of the Scottish Winter Mountaineering Course in Glencoe

When I was struggling up a snow slope in rain and storm, I asked myself from time to time "Why am I doing this at all?" But then when the rain let up a bit and I stopped for a moment to look around, I'd ask myself "Why didn't I do this a long time ago?" Even though it can sometimes be exhausting and uncomfortable in the mountains, you are rewarded double and triple. With views over great landscapes and insights, for example, about what is important to you. For me, nature and the mountains are at the forefront. And the more confident I can be in the mountains, the further I get. During the Mountaineering course I learned a lot, had a great time with like-minded people and got a lot of desire for even more. A course couldn't be better, could it?

#1 The Classic of Skye - The Old Man of Storr

The Old Man of Storr is the landmark of the Isle of Skyeand must not be missed on any visit to the island. Unfortunately, it is also very crowded here. Therefore, a visit in the early morning hours or in the evening is particularly suitable. In the evening, however, it can be a bit shady, as the sun is then behind the mountains. Many visitors come up the steep path from the parking lot to the viewpoint, take a photo and then go back to the car. This is a pity, because there are so many beautiful views to discover here on a wide variety of trails. Paths that even lead up to the foot of the Old Man of Storr. 

The Storr is a plateau about 719 meters high. The bizarre towers, needles and rock sculptures at the foot of the Storr were formed by a landslide. entstanden. Einer der Türme ist die 535 Meter hohe Felsnadel “Old Man of Storr”.

#2 Brother's Point - on the Tracks of the Dinosaurs

They are not easy to find. But they are said to exist at several places on the Isle of Skye: fossilized footprints of dinosaurs.One of the places where you can find dinosaur tracks is Brother's Point. There are said to be more than a dozen prints here. However, they can be seen only at low tide, when the water has receded from the sandstone cliffs.

Unfortunately, even after a long search and with a lot of imagination, we could not discover any dinosaur tracks. Maybe you have more luck.

Tip: Tip: Visit the Dinosaur Museum in Staffin and ask about the dinosaur tracks. There are also guided tours to the footprints on the beach. However, when we were there, the museum was unfortunately closed for Covid-19 and the tours did not take place.

But the dinosaur tracks were quickly forgotten, because the walk has more to offer. From the flat coast we follow the path up the cliff. The path narrows and eventually bends to the left onto a dramatic headland - Brother's Point - or Rubha nam Brathairen in Gaelic. You can climb to the highest point of the headland and be rewarded with a magnificent view all the way to Kilt Rock in the north.

The excursion to Brother's Point is varied and also perfect for a leisurely afternoon with a small picnic. The walk is not overly strenuous but memorably scenic. And best of all, it's not crowded even on nice summer days.

#3 Quiraing - perhaps the most beautiful Hike on the Isle of Skye

Having already seen the Old Man of Storr, I thought there can be nothing better. But when I was standing at the parking lot of the Quiraing, I knew I was wrong. Mother Nature has outdone herself here with a gigantic rockfall.

Even the access road is spectacular. It winds up the flank of the mountain range in serpentine lines. Behind every bend, a new view opens up, leaving you in awe. The same is true of the hiking trail. I had to keep stopping and turning around - after all, I didn't want to miss any of these fantastic views.

At the parking lot, a map gives an overview of the hiking routes. A nice round trip leads you along the upper edge of the cliffs to the rock needles and back along the flank of the cliffs. However, it is better not to walk the upper section in fog or strong winds. We did not walk it, because the wind almost blew me away.

Safety First: Be prepared for sudden weather changes on EVERY hike on the Isle of Skye. Take rain gear and warm clothes, wear sturdy boots, don't forget your map, compass and GPS (or your GPS-enabled cell phone with offline map). Also pack a picnic and enough drinking water. Depending on the season, you may also want to bring bug spray and sunscreen. A first aid kit should also be in your backpack.

Access and parking: Between Brogaig and Stenscholl turn west off the A855 towards Quiraing. Parking is available at the start of the Quiraing Walk. GPS: 57°37'41.9″N 6°17'23.8″W

#4 Fairy Tale World - the Fairy Glen

If there are elves and fairies anywhere on the Isle of Skye, it is certainly in the Fairy Glen – dem “Elfen Tal”Fairy Glen. Green hills line the Fairy Glen and are crisscrossed by a network of walking paths. The Glen seems a bit like a man-made fantasy landscape, I've never seen anything quite like it. It's a perfect place to drift along, discovering new fantastic views all the time. Especially impressive is the free-standing rock "Castle Ewen",which you can even climb.

Don't confuse the Fairy Glen with the Fairy Pools. The Fairy Pools are a string of natural pools and waterfalls, but they are extremely crowded in the summer when the weather is good.

#5 White Coral Beaches of Claigan - Caribbean Feeling in Scotland

The coast of the Isle of Skye consists mainly of spectacular cliffs. But again and again the rugged cliffs are interrupted by sandy beaches. Among the most beautiful beaches on Skye are the white coral beaches at Claigan.

From the end of the parking lot, follow the path towards the coast. At Camas Ban you will finally reach a first bay. However, this one has only a few sandy areas. Follow the path to the right through a gap in the dry stone wall over a small hill. At the top you will see the white coral beach - a great sight. But even more beautiful is the view of the beach when you climb the small hill Cnoc Mor a Ghrobain behind the beach. The way back is the same way.

#6 Neist Point - Skye's most beautiful Sea Cliffs and Orca Hotspot

The cliffs at Neist Point, the westernmost headland on the Isle of Skye,are the most beautiful on the island. The steep cliffs with the photogenic lighthouse at the top jut far out into the sea. Down at the foot of the cliffs the thunderous waves break, spray splashes into the air. At Neist Point, an epic view awaits you from the View Point, as well as a six-kilometer walk to the tip of the headland. Along the way, you'll see the remains of an old cable car station and an old jetty with a small crane.Both facilities used to supply the lighthouse with supplies. However, the lighthouse is now abandoned and is operated automatically from a distance.

Tip: Take binoculars with you, because with a little luck you can watch whales and dolphins here. Neist Point is considered the orca hotspot of Skye.It must be especially beautiful here at sunset .

Access and parking: From Dunvegan take the single track road B884 towards Gleann Dail (Glendale). Just before Milovaig a small road branches off to Waterstein and Neist Point. There is a parking area at the end of the road. There are also other marked parking spaces on the side of the access road. GPS: 57°25'46.8″N 6°46'44.9″W.

#7 The "Bad Step" and the Cuillins - from Kilmarie to Sligachan

The hike in the heart of the Cuillins is one of the most beautiful but also most strenuous I have done on Skye. And also one of the most adventurous. Because the route from Kilmarie to Sligachan leads over the famous "Bad Step". Behind this mysterious name is a 60° inclined rock plate, which blocks the coastal path and has already brought some hikers to turn back.

But those who have overcome the Bad Step will be richly rewarded. For the coastal scenery is fantastic and Loch Coruisk is said to be the most beautiful on the Isle of Skye. Alternativ: If you prefer not to walk the "Bad Step", you have the possibility to follow an easier path to Sligachan. This passes Loch na Creitheach and also avoids the river crossing and the crossing of the pass at 295 meters above sea level.

#8 Getting Lost - for Pathfinders from The Storr Loch Dam to Portree

The hike from "The Storr Loch" dam to Portree is a little adventure. And also one of the most beautiful longer hikes we have done on the Isle of Skye.

The tour starts at the parking lot of the Storr Loch Dam (Loch Leatharn Dam) and leads along the coast to the charming town of Portree. After about 500 meters you come to a house, here you turn left to the viewpoint Bearreraig Bay where you can see an old hydroelectric power station .

The route continues through moorland along the coastal cliffs.There is no path, at best a few sheep tracks, but they quickly get lost in the lush green of the moorland. The views back to The Storr and Trotternish Ridge are fantastic, as are the views over the coastal ridge ahead and the Isle of Raasay. The highest point of the walk is Sithean Bhealaich Chumhaing (392 m). From here you will go downhill on a trail until you reach several cattle pastures. You have to cross them until you reach the town of Portree via the Scorrybreac Trail along the shore.

Tip: The terrain in the moorland is extremely uneven. In the high grass, however, you do not see the unevenness. trekking poles give you the necessary stability and also protect you from twisting your ankle.

During the hike we did not meet any other people. Only on the last part shortly before Portree we met three hikers. The nature experience was perfect, in addition with super weather. As company there were far and wide only curious sheep. But from them we felt at times observed from all sides.

Attention: The route is very exposed and not recommended in bad weather / poor visibility. Since there is no path, you have to find the route yourself. This is best done when you can see the hills and cliffs. Because otherwise you will quickly end up in a dead end, where a steep drop makes it impossible to continue. But even in good weather you should have map, compass and GPS with you and know how to use them.

Duration: 6-8 hours

Directions to get there: It's best to have a cab take you from Portree to "The Storr Loch" dam.

#9 For long Distance Hikers - the Skye Trail

For those who can't get enough of hiking, there is the Skye Trail. This long distance trail is a challenging hike through the breathtaking landscape of the Isle of Skye. The route goes for 128 kilometers partly through difficult terrain with steep paths and slopes. But if you take on the trail, you'll be rewarded with spectacular mountain and coastal scenery and, if you're lucky, you may even spot wildlife.

The hike goes in 7 stages from Broadford in the south to Rubha Hunish in the northof the Isle of Skye. The sections are quite different: One time there are only paths of sheep (or not even that) and you have to find your own way. And the other time you are with many other visitors on well-trodden paths.

But it is the mixture that makes the trail interesting. In addition, the Skye Trail includes some of the most beautiful walks on the Isle of Skye, such as the Cuillins, the Old Man of Storr or the Quairang.

For the Skye Trail you should have experience in using GPS, map and compass. Some sections are not recommended in fog. For example, the section between Portree and the Old Man of Storr runs along almost unvisited coastal cliffs partly without a path.

Tip: It's best to walk the trail from south to north - then the landscape becomes more impressive with each stage.

There is access by public transport and accommodation at the end of each stage. The hike can also be done very well as a camping trip with a combination of campsites and wild camping. However, we took it a bit easy and walked the Skye Trail with the support of MACs Adventures. This provided us with luggage transport as well as a shuttle to the starting points of the stages or to our accommodations.

Warm up - From Kilmarie to the first Pass

The first section of the hike is perfect for warming up. It is wide and easy to walk and leads steadily uphill. You'll warm up quickly. We cross wild land owned by the John Muir Trust.

Such a wide path is rare on Skye. It was bulldozed by the army in the summer of 1968. This was to make access to Loch Coruisk easier for anglers. Fortunately, the path was never completely finished. Because also the coastal path with the Bad Step would have fallen victim to the bulldozers then. Thanks to all who at that time fought for the preservation of the wild coastal landscape!

From the highest point at Am Mam you have a fantastic view of the bay and two stone houses. Afterwards, the trail descends steeply in serpentines to the bay of Camasunary.

Alternatively:Instead of Kilmarie, you can also start in the tranquil village of Elgol. In Elgol, follow the signs to Camasunary or Sligachan. The path leads about two hours along the coast with a view of the black cuillins on the opposite side into the bay of Camasunary.

There are two houses in Camasunary Bay. The first is the former bothy - now a private house. The second is the new bothy.The shelter is run by volunteers from the Mountain Bothy Association. Here you can spend the night or prepare a meal. Leave everything as you found it and also take your trash with you.

River Crossing

At the western end of the bay the Abhainn Camus Fhionnairigh flows into the sea. In former times there is said to have been a bridge here. But today you have to ford the stream. This is not very difficult. The river is relatively wide, but shallow and the current is small. Tip: It is easier at low tide!

In retrospect, I learned that there should be stepping stones for crossing about 100 meters above the river mouth. Whether this is actually so, I can not say, however.

Coastal Path

After the river crossing, the trail continues as a narrow, stony coastal path. Rocks and larger boulders must be repeatedly avoided or climbed over. But the view over the bay is fantastic. Below the rugged western flank of Sgurr na Stri, the climbs then become more frequent and difficult. The most difficult section is a steeply sloping rock slab that must be crossed. The stone is grippy, but the steep position above the sea quickly makes you feel a bit queasy.

From the bay to the Loch it is only about 3.5 kilometers. However, you don't make fast progress. The path lets you walk only slowly and it is just too beautiful to go fast.

Der berüchtigte Felsen der Isle of Skye – How bad is the “Bad Step”?

You will recognize the Bad Step as soon as you stand in front of it. A large slab of rock, inclined at about 60°, blocks the coastal path.The rock is directly above the sea. So here, in addition to surefootedness and a head for heights, you also need good nerves.

Now it goes on only with some climbing. Across the rock slab is a crack about 30 cm wide. You have to climb along this crack. This is not as difficult as it sounds at first. There are always enough ledges that you can step on and hold on to. The entrance to the crack is the most difficult, because it lies on a ledge at about waist height. So that you don't get dizzy, it's best to keep your gaze turned towards the mountain.

Tip: Always keep three of four contact points (feet & hands) on the rock. Only when you have found a secure hold, go one step further. Especially if you are carrying heavy backpacks on your back.

Loch Coruisk

About 500 meters behind the Bad Step you reach Loch Coruisk. It is considered one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland. A nice place for a swim or a picnic.There are also some nice places to pitch a tent and spend the night.

Over the Pass and through Glen Sligachan

The trail now continues along the eastern side of the loch. In serpentines it winds continuously upwards. On your left a small stream flows, on your right the high mountain Sgurr na Stri rises. It is a total of 295 meters in altitude to the pass,where a large cairn stands.

Tip: Don't forget your midge repellent. We were surprised by a nasty midge attack behind the pass. It's best to read my article Midges in Scotland - When? Where? What helps?

From the pass you can already see the path through Glen Sligachan far below. Keep to the left and after some time you will meet a larger path, which is also maintained.

The difficult and strenuous part of the trail is now done. Now the trail goes steadily downhill until you reach the flat Glen Sligachan. The path crosses numerous small streams. From the pass to the Sligachan Hotel it is about 9.5 kilometers.

Just before the Sligachan Hotel you will cross the old stone bridge built by Thomas Telford. A nice end to the hike.

What else is there?

General Information about the Orkney Islands

The Orkney Islands are an archipelago of about 70 islands and invite to a road trip with island hopping. However, only about 16 islands are inhabited. The largest and most important island is called "Mainland". It is connected with other islands via the “Churchill-Barriers” These include Lamb Holm, Glimpse Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay. All other islands are only accessible by ferry or boat.

With the exception of the islands of Hoy and the Mainland, all islands are rather flat. The highest elevation is Ward Hill on Hoy with about 480 meters. Hoy and Mainland impress with their cliffs and sea stacs, such as the "Old Man of Hoy" or the Yesnaby cliffs. The rest of the islands are covered with heathland and lush green meadows.

Orkney is famous for its historical heritage. In addition to the prehistoric ruins, the famous Stone Age village of Skara Brae and the stone circles, this also includes the numerous abandoned military installations and - under water - the shipwrecks of Scapa Flow from the First World War.The islands are therefore not only popular with historians, hiking enthusiasts and hobby ornithologists - also divers like to come to dive the wrecks. These lie around 30 to 40 meters deep, it is cold and dark. This is only something for divers with dry suits and appropriate practice.For less experienced divers, however, there is the possibility to dive at the block wrecks at shallower depths.

Map of Highlights and Campsites from our Road Trip on the Orkney Islands

The following highlights are just some of the Orkney sights you can visit during your road trip. They are limited to the main islands, which are connected, and the island of Hoy.

Unfortunately, in September 2020 we couldn't visit all the places we would have liked to see. Some places had closed because of Covid-19.

On the map of the Orkney Islands you will find the highlights of our road trip and suggestions for possible places to pitch a tent.And that you can dive right in, I have also uploaded a small photo for each high light in the map.

#1 Skara Brae - the Heart of Neolithic Orkney

After a violent storm in 1850, the former owner of Skaill House, William Graham Watt, made a remarkable discovery. In the Bay of Skaill, the storm exposed strange stone formations. Upon closer examination, the remains of stone houses became apparent. Watt led excavations in the following years and uncovered a prehistoric settlement. The remains found are up to 5,000 years old. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae is probably the best known and most important excavation site in Orkney. Skara Brae is also considered to be the best preserved Neolithic settlement in the whole of Europe. The "heart of Neolithic Orkney" is therefore often called the Pompeii of Scotland. Skara Brae has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

In a visitor center you can learn details about life in the Neolithic Age and the archaeological excavations in Skara Brae. Replicas of the stone houses show vividly what it must have looked like inside at that time.

#2 Skaill House - Orkney's haunted House

Skaill House is often called Orkney's haunted house. But what is it all about? From the outside it looks like a typical Scottish manor house.

The house is isolated on the west coast of Orkney-Mainland near the archaeological site of Skara Brae. It was built in the 1620s by Bishop George Graham as a simple manor house. His son became Laird of Orkney. Since then, the house has been constantly expanded - space was needed for the family, for souvenirs, for guests and their numerous gifts. Over the course of 400 years, quite a few things have accumulated: a tiger skin from India, a tea service from Captain James Cook's last voyage, a flag of the Bolsheviks from 1919, and much more.

Skaill House has been open to visitors since 1997. The house is a real treasure chest, with artifacts from all over the world. Everything is lovingly arranged and carefully labeled. A truly worthwhile visit.

But something remains hidden from the visitor's eye: the skeletons under the wooden floor in the entrance area. They were found when the old stone floor was replaced with a wooden one. Research revealed that the south wing of Skaill House was partially built on an old Pictish cemetery. In order not to disturb the peace of the graves, the remains were put back. So it is logical that there are also stories about ghost sightings in Skaill House. Ubby is the name of the ghost and he is a man who is said to have built up an island in the neighboring Loch of Skail for years.

Tip: after sightseeing in Skara Brae and at Skaill House, you can laze around a bit in the nearby sandy cove . Tip for camping: Do you want to spend the night in a tent on your road trip across the Orkney Islands? Then this would be a good place to pitch your tent.

#3 The Falconry at Skaill House

A visit to the falconry at Skaill House is also worthwhile. It is located directly across from the entrance to the magnificent mansion. In the only falconry on the northern island of Scotland you can see owls, falcons and other birds of prey. You will learn about the animals, their training and falconry itself.

I was skeptical at first, because birds of prey have no business in captivity in my opinion. When I learned that the falconers walk their birds while they fly freely behind them doing their own thing, I was quite amazed. All the birds you see here can hunt on their own and might just fly away during training. If there wasn't a connection between the animals and their keepers.

In addition to flight demonstrations by the falconers, you will also have the opportunity to hold the falcon or owl yourself or have it land on your outstretched arm. With the appropriate inviting posture and a piece of meat on the leather glove, the four-kilogram eagle owl also landed on my hand and even let me scratch its belly.

#4 Ring of Brodgar - mystic Stone Circle

Only 21 of the 60 monoliths are still standing today, but the stone circle is so big that you can hardly see it with one look. With a diameter of 104 meters it is the third largest stone circle in Great Britain.Only those at Avebury and Stanton Drew are larger. Most of the stones are around two meters high. But one is particularly large - a full five meters is said to be it.

Wind and weather of the last 4,700 years have left their mark on the stones. One of the stones was even split by a lightning strike. All of them are overgrown with mosses and lichens, and when you take a closer look, they shimmer greenish and yellowish in some places. A great contrast when the heather blooms! When dark clouds hang over the monoliths, the mystical atmosphere here is perfect. How might it have been here in the past, when people came here to participate in unknown rituals?

#5 Standing Stones of Stenness and Barnhouse Village

The prehistoric Standing Stones of Stenness impress by their size. They are up to six meters high, more than three and a half times as tall as I am. A sheep seems tiny next to these stone giants. Today there are only three Standing Stones left. But about 5000 years ago there were twelve stone giants forming a circle with a diameter of 44 meters. A two-meter deep ditch surrounded the stones, and in the center was a large fireplace. Who or what was worshipped here, nobody knows exactly.

What would Scotland be without its legends and myths?And of course there is also a story about the Standing Stones of Stenness: the stones are actually fossilized giants. Every year, around New Year, they come to life. During the nights, the giants then go to the nearby hole to drink from it. Whoever observes them doing so is haunted by bad luck.

North of the Standing Stones is Barnhouse Village,which is also about 5000 years old. It once consisted of 15 houses. The settlement is said to have been similar to Skara Brae. There is even said to have been stone furniture, stoves and beds. Today, only the remains of the walls of four houses are preserved.

By the way: The name "Stenness" comes from the old nordic word "Stein - nes", which means "stone place".

#6 Stromness Museum

The small museum in Stromness is a real treasure chest. The exhibition is lovingly prepared and a colorful mixture of almost everything. Sometimes the exhibits seem a bit jumbled - next to stuffed animals are red pumps. But the logic behind it usually becomes clearer when reading the texts on the display cases.

The exhibition begins on the first floor with maritime and wartime history,including the famous wrecks of Scapa Flow.At the back of the building, Orkney-born polar explorer John Rae paddles one of the world's first inflatable boats. He is looking for traces of the lost Franklin Expedition - and makes a find. Inuit art and polar clothing complement the exhibits about Rae's expeditions.

The upper floor continues with the themes of archaeology, ethnology and natural history.Native birds impress with their size in display cases, and tiny shells are carefully arranged in showcases.

All in all, very worthwhile. Allow at least 45 minutes for your visit. Current opening hours and entrance fees can be found here.

#7 Coastal walk Yesnaby to North Gaulton Castle

The coastline at Yesnaby is one of the most beautiful in Orkney.A short walk offers spectacular views of a wild cliff with seastacks, caves and rock arches. In summer, numerous seabirds breed on the rugged cliffs. At the foot of the cliffs, the waves crash thunderously against the rocks. During or shortly after a storm from the west, the waves are especially high, making the hike an unforgettable experience.

From the parking lot you walk the coastal path always south. There are several trails. Some of the paths go around the headlands and are a bit longer, others connect the bays on the shortest way. Just let yourself drift and go exploring.

The North Gaulton Castleis a seastack about 52 meters high. It is the highlight of the hike and was also the turning point for us. But only after we enjoyed the view at a long picnic.

#8 Brough of Birsay

The Brough of Birsay is a tidal island in the northwest of the main island of Orkney. The main attraction of the island are the archaeological remains of a Pictish settlement as well as remains of Viking buildings.

Birsay is accessible only during low tide via a narrow concrete causeway. The time window for a visit begins about two hours before low tide and ends about two hours after. Click here for the tide table.

When the sea recedes, the rocky seabed with countless tide pools is revealed. The rocks as well as the cliffs are great photo opportunities and there is much to discover. Maybe you will be lucky and find one of the coveted cowrie shells.

By the way, in summer Birsay is supposed to be one of the best places to watch puffins. Unfortunately we didn't see any. Because in August the puffins leave their breeding caves and spend the rest of the year on the open sea. Only in April/May of the next year they come back to the land to breed.

At the northwest end of the island stands a small unmanned lighthouseIt was built in 1925 by David Alan Stevenson. The Stevensons built lighthouses for several generations and are famous in Scotland as a lighthouse building family.

#9 Enigmatic Whalebone Sculpture of the Orkneys

It looks like an owl sitting on a wooden post. Just now, it spreads its wings and starts to fly. But as you get closer, you realize that the owl is a big bone. The post is also a bone. Two huge whale bones are stuck together here to form a strange sculpture. How did the bones get here? And for what purpose was the Whalebone sculpture erected here in Orkney? #10 Broch of Gurness

The Broch of Gurness is an Iron Age settlement located on a beautiful stretch of coastline in the north of Mainland. It consisted of about 14 houses arranged around a central tower. With a diameter of 20 meters and a height of 3.5 meters, the Broch of Gurness is the largest preserved tower of its kind.For defense, ramparts and ditches were built around the settlement.

The site is about 2000 years old. It was excavated in the late 1930s and is amazingly well preserved. Besides the remains from the Iron Age, the excavations also found evidence of later use of the site by Picts and Vikings.

Unlike Skara Brae, you can walk among the ruins and go inside the remains of the houses and the tower. Information boards explain what there is to see. Among them are a stone toilet, shelves, beds, fireplaces and a washbasin for possible ritual purposes.

#11 St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall

The northernmost cathedral in Britain is dedicated to St. Magnus of Orkney. Magnus lived around 1100 AD. As Earls of Orkney, he and his cousin Hakon ruled the islands. But as can happen in the best of families, Hakon betrayed Magnus and had him executed. Shortly thereafter, miracles occurred on the Orkneys. Who else, if not the Christian Magnus, could have caused these miracles?

The cathedral is built of different colored sandstone, which gives it a very distinctive look. And there is something else that makes the cathedral special: St. Magnus has its own dungeon - "Marwick's Hole".

The cathedral is surrounded by a graveyard where, among others, the Scottish Arctic explorer Dr. John Rae found his burial place. Inside the cathedral there is also a memorial to the explorer from the Orkneys.

#12 Bay Inganess with the shipwreck Juniata

Bay Inganess is a picturesque bay with an extremely photogenically placed shipwreck - the Juniata. The tanker was completed under the name Sprucol in 1918. Then on April 17, 1940, the ship was sunk under the name Juniata. Thus, the Juniata became part of the fourth Churchill Barrier between South Ronaldsay and Burray islands. Nine years later, however, she was lifted and was to be taken to a shipbreaking yard. But the condition of the wreck was already so bad that she was beached again in Bay Inganess. Only the stern was apparently salvaged. All that remains is the bow of the ship, which now overlooks the beach as a rusty piece of wreckage.

Opposite the Bay Inganess is a nice picnic area and there is a loop trail with bird-watching opportunities.

#13 Italian Chapel - the Miracle of Camp 60

The Italian war prisoners who built the Churchill Barriers built an Italian chapel on Lamb Holm. Beginning in 1942, the "Miracle of Camp 60" was constructed with the simplest of means from two Nissen huts joined together. Today, the Italian Chapel is one of Orkney's main attractions and is also in the highest category of the Scottish Heritage List.

The first thing the prisoners made was a figure of St. George, the dragon slayer. With the permission of the camp director and under the direction of Domenico Chiocchetti, the prisoners of war brought a bit of home to the north with the chapel. Everyone contributed something to the realization of the Miracle. In 1944 the chapel was finally finished. However, Camp 60 was disbanded shortly thereafter - the war was over and the Churchill Barriers were completed. The chapel, built with much love, remained unused and threatened with decay.

In 1960, the then site manager Domenico Chiocchetti was invited to Orkney. Together with local craftsmen he restored the Italian Chapel. In 1992, exactly 50 years after construction began, the prisoners of that time came back to Lambs Holm and celebrated a Mass together in their "Miracle of Camp 60."

#14 Churchill Barriers and Block Wrecks

Scapa Flow Bay was the most important base for the Royal Navy during both world wars. Due to the surrounding islands, the ships were well protected here during storms. However, on October 14, 1939, the German submarine U 47 entered the bay and subsequently sank the battleship HMS Royal Oak, killing 833 men.

In order to protect the fleet from further attacks by German submarines, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill subsequently ordered the construction of barriers. The Churchill Barriers were thereafter to prevent passage for ships between the islands of Mainland, Lamb Holm, Glimbs Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay. To this end, ships were initially sunk in the passages beginning in May 1940. This was followed by 40,000 cubic meters of stone and 300,000 tons of concrete blocks. The dams were declared at the time as a necessary road construction project to connect the individual islands. In fact, with this trick, prisoners of war could be used for the work. This was because, according to the Geneva Convention, the use of prisoners of war was only allowed for civilian purposes, not for military ones. The 1,300 Italian war prisoners worked on the barriers for five years at that time. On May 12, 1945 - at the end of the war - the road link across the Churchill Barriers was finally opened.

#15 Hoxa Head Coastal Artillery Battery - Lost Place on the Orkneys

The Orkney Islands are littered with relics from the two world wars. Especially well known are the Churchill Barriers and the wrecks of Scapa Flow. But no less impressive are the numerous ruins of bunkers and defense installations on the Orkneys, for example at Hoxa Head. A circular walk along the coast leads past the ruins of the coastal artillery battery and gives you an idea of the strategic importance of the Orkneys at that time. Tip for camping: Do you want to spend the night in a tent on your road trip across the Orkney Islands? On the way to Hoxa Head you will pass a beach with a toilet house. This would be a good place to pitch your tent.

#16 “Old Man of Hoy” – Sea Stack auf den Orkneys

If there is a "Must Do" on Orkney's island of Hoy, it is a visit to the old man - the "Old Man of Hoy". #17 Rackwick Bay - the most beautiful Beach of the Orkneys

It is said that Rackwick Bay is the most beautiful beach in Orkney. That may well be, I have not seen a more beautiful one. It is especially beautiful in the evening light, when the sand glows golden. The big round stones decorate the beach like Christmas balls. I have not seen anything comparable on any other beach in Orkney.

Tip: In Rackwick Bay there is a bothy where you can stay overnight.We pitched our tent here for the night. The location is beautiful, but... Midges! There were already many in the evening. But in the morning, a thick midge fog surrounded us. So, before you camp here, read my article Midges in Scotland - When? Where? What helps?

What else is there?

During the Covid Summer 2020, unfortunately not all prehistoric sites in Orkney were open. These included the Neolithic burial chambers Maeshow Chambered Cairn on Mainland and Tomb of the Eagles and Tomb of the Otters on South Ronaldsay. We would also have liked to visit the Scapa Flow Museum on the Isle of Hoy. But it was closed for renovation. Will I travel to the Orkneys again? I am pretty sure, yes. Because besides the places mentioned before, I would like to plunge into the floods and dive to the wrecks and then warm up again on land while watching the cute puffins.

Where is Edinburgh's Ghost Island Cramond?

Cramond Island is one of several islands in the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh.It is about 500 meters long and has an area of 7.70 hectares. As a tidal island, Cramond is connected to the mainland at low tide and can be reached either through the mudflats or via a concrete walkway about 1.1 km long.

What is there to see on the Ghost Island Cramond?

Today the island is deserted, but in both world wars it was part of a network of gun batteries and searchlights on the Fifth of Forth.The aim was to protect the anchor bay and the naval base Rosyth from enemy attacks. Most of the buildings you can see on the island date from the Second World War.

The island is often called ghost island. But I have not been able to find any ghost stories that directly affect the island. So the name is more likely based on the fact that the island is deserted and no longer used by humans. Except as a destination for excursions.And as such it is very popular especially with locals. For tourists, however, it is rather an insider tip.Because most people concentrate more on the well-known highlights in the old town of Edinburgh, a trip to Cramond Island is on the to-do list for few.

The dam that connects the island with the mainland is lined with concrete teeth. These massive piers stand close together and are a good 4 meters high. They stand out from afar and are among the most bizarre things you can see in Scotland. A "must see" for all lovers of lost places and photographers. I couldn't stop photographing the concrete pillars from all imaginable angles.

The pillars are a relic from the Second World War. They are part of a larger boat barrier, which included submarine nets. The purpose of the concrete teeth was to prevent enemy torpedo boats from passing through to the anchorage bay and the naval base Rosyth. On their sides, narrow slits can still be seen, in which concrete beams formed a continuous wall. The barrier is often called a submarine barrier. But the barrier was intended for normal boats, because the water here is not deep enough for submarines.

Relics from the Second World War

Besides the bizarre boat barrier, there are other relics from the Second World War on the island, including several bunkers. But the island was already used for military purposes in the First World War Already in 1914 a submarine network was stretched from Cramond Island via Inchmickery to Inchcolm Island and the coast. Gun emplacements were also set up on the three islands.

In the Second World War the fortifications were further expanded. On the south side of the island, just behind the dam, there is a big brick building. Here a 75 mm cannon and a searchlight were installed. On the north side of the island you can explore more bunkers from the inside and outside. The positions here once guarded the Fifth of Forth. Beside the bunkers you can also see the curved Rails of a twin six-pound gun. .

The gray concrete is now also used by graffiti artists. The colors and the blooming flowers around the bunkers give a great contrast.

From the north side of the island you also have a good view of the neighboring Inchmickery Island (the ‘Battleship’ Island)which was also expanded during the Second World War for defense purposes. There are even more bunkers and other buildings on it than on Cramond. Between Cramond and Inchmickery there was a submarine network during the war. You can see the attachment point for the net in front of the shore at low tide.

Inchmickery Island is now a bird sanctuary. With a boat tour will get a little closer. Because of Covid-19 the tour was unfortunately not offered during my stay.

Ruin of the old Farm of Cramond

Sheep were already being kept on the island of Cramond in the 1790s. In the middle of the island, the ruins of a farmhouse still testify to the former agricultural use.

The farmhouse is already marked on a map from 1853, but it may be even older. Part of it was rented out as a vacation home. After the farmer died in 1904, one family even rented the whole island as a vacation home. Sheep were kept on Cramond until the 1960s. Today the ruins of the house are hidden in the small wood in the middle of the island.

Viewpoint with a View to the Forth Bridges

From the highest point of the island you have a great view of the Fifth of Forth. You can even see the famous Forth Bridge, which was opened for trains in 1890. In the other direction, the skyline of Edinburgh rises with the Granton Waterfront and the historic Gasometer from 1903.

Natur

The tidal coast is a habitat for numerous birds. At low tide, seagulls and waders find a richly set table and hobby ornithologists find great observation opportunities.During my stay I have seen the following birds: Black-headed Gulls, Great White Gulls, Oystercatchers, Grey Herons, Little Egrets, Goosanders, Eider Ducks, Great Crested Grebes, Cormorants, Mute Swans, Turnstones, Dunlin, Redshank, Curlews, Raven Crows, Goldfinch.

Numerous snails and various types of shells can be seen in the mudflats. Most however only as empty shells. The stones are overgrown with seaweed. They must look beautiful under water.

A walk through the mudflats is something very special. Rubber boots or at least waterproof shoes are helpful. The mudflats are very soft in places and you sink deeply.

I was just about to clean my shoes in one of the tide pools when I discovered a small octopusin the water. I was quite amazed and forgot my dirty shoes immediately. He was sitting motionless in the water. Normally the octopuses adapt to their environment in color, but this one was all white. The octopus was no longer alive. Maybe the tiny pool had become too warm and too low in oxygen. Poor guy, I felt sorry for him. But still - he was so beautiful to look at.

Tip: from the middle of August the blackberries are ripe, they grow especially close to the north side of the island, next to the small asphalt road.

What else is there to see?

Village Cramond

The small village of Cramond is one of the most important archaeological sites in Scotland. Already in the Mesolithic Age people lived in and around Cramond. Later Cramond became an important Roman settlement with a large fortress. The foundations of the fortress are still visible next to the church. Today Cramond is a beautiful example of an 18th century Scottish village. Among other things you can see an old church with a cemetery, old mansions, the ruins of two water-powered mills and a small harbour.

Even more Sea

If you follow the coastal path to the east, you will come back to the city of Edinburgh. I walked the distance to Princess Street Garden in about 2.5 hours. Most of the time I could still walk in the mudflats, later I walked the coast path.

Directions to Cramond Island from Edinburgh

The island of Cramond can be reached quickly and easily from Edinburgh - just perfect for a day trip! Bus number 41 runs every 20 to 30 minutes between the center of Edinburgh and the village of Cramond.The journey from Queensferry Street to Cramond (Cramond Glebe Road stop) takes about 20 minutes, from Waverly Station about 40 minutes. A single ticket costs 1.80 Euro and can be bought from the bus driver with a credit card or in coins.

If you come by car, take Cramond Glebe Road. Shortly before the end of the road, a parking lot branches off to the right. On weekends it can get crowded, so it is best to arrive early.

There is a public toilet and an ice cream van at the starting point of the hike. Opposite the small harbour there is a small bistro and a little above the parking lot is the Cramond Inn.

When is the Dam to Cramond Island accessible?

Cramond Island can only be reached via the dam at low tide. The Coast Guard recommends that you only walk around the dam during the four hours around the lowest water level. There is a list of safe times on the website of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute Queensferry. A sign in front of the dam also indicates the earliest possible crossing (starting from the mainland) and the latest return (starting from the island). There is also an emergency phone number in case you do not return in time.

How to get there

Hoxa Head is located on the Orkney island of South Ronaldsay, west of the ferry port of St. Margaret's Hope. You can see the ruins of the coastal artillery battery from the ferry as you arrive.. Tip: Are you on the Orkneys by tent or camper? A great place to camp is the beach "Sands of Wright", located about halfway between the ferry terminal and Hoxa Head.

Coastal Artillery Batteries on the Orkneys

Hoxa Head is one of the best examples of a coastal artillery battery on the Orkneys. The facility guarded the southern entrance to Scapa Flow, the Royal Navy's most important anchorage in both World Wars. The battery included observation towers, gun and searchlight emplacements as well as shelters and other outbuildings. It was paired with a similar facility on the opposite island of Flotta - the Buchanan Battery.

Between Flotta and Hoxa Head a submarine interception net was stretched across the sound. The net was supplemented by induction loops on the sea floor to detect metal hulls of ships. Underwater mines could be triggered in case of an attack from land.

The battery was abandoned after the war. The huts were dismantled in 1947 and the cannons were removed in 1950. The ruins you can still see today on Hoxa Head are mainly the gun emplacements of the 6-pounder cannons from the Second World War. Due to the ongoing decay, some of the ruins are fenced in and no one is allowed to enter.

Coastal Hike to the Ruins of Hoxa Head

From the parking lot you walk further up the road. Shortly after the house "The Bu" a narrow path to the coast turns off to the right. When you reach the shore, turn left, always along the coast. Soon you will see the first ruins - two gun emplacements of the Balfour Battery from the Second World War.An information board describes the facility that was once located here at Hoxa Head.

The path continues between barbed wire and the coast. The view from here to Scapa Flow and the islands of Flotta and Hoy are fantastic.

By the way: Hoxa Head is also a good point to see whales and dolphins. In summer you can even see minke whales and orcas.

The path is easy to walk and you will see more ruins on both sides of the path. Once you reach the southernmost point of the headland, the path curves back a little further inland. Here you will find the remains of the Hoxa Head Battery, including more gun emplacements, bunkers, shelter foundations, and a solitary fireplace and chimney.

After you have passed several remains of concrete foundations, follow the dirt road to the right back to the parking lot.

Here is where the Dog is buried - Greyfriars Bobby

Right at the entrance to the cemetery there is a gravestone made of pink granite. In front of it there is a pile of sticks. No flowers, no angel figures - just dry sticks. That's a bit unusual, isn't it? The gravestone was also erected by the "Dog Aid Society of Scotland". So there is a dog buried here - and a very special one: the little Skye Terrier Bobby.

Even after the death of his master, the policeman John Gray, Bobby did not leave his side. It is even said that the dog lived for 14 years on the cemetery. When he finally died in January 1872, he was buried at Greyfriars Kirkyard. So the faithful dog could be near his master even after his own death.

Whether the story is true or not is doubted by some people. Maybe it was just different dogs of the cemetery guard, who recognized the marketing effect early on? But I love the first story, it is so touching. And of course I also looked for a little stick for Bobby and put it in front of the gravestone.

Maybe you have seen Bobby before at the entrance of the cemetery? Not as a ghost but as a bronze figurewhich the inhabitants of Edinburgh have put up in memory of the loyal dog. It is said that it brings luck if you touch Bobby's snout.

Directly opposite the bronze statue and next to the cemetery there is also a pubof the same name where you can end your visit to the cemetery with an ale.

History of the Cemetery Greyfriars Kirkyard

But first a little bit of history: Until 1559 there was a Franciscan monasteryon the site of the Greyfriar Kirkyard. After the Reformation the Catholic monastery was dissolved. Since then, the area was the property of Mary Queen of Scots. As the former cemetery of St. Giles' Cathedral had become too small and was increasingly bothering the residents with a bad smell, the Queen made the monastery grounds available for a new cemetery in 1562. The grey robes of the "Grey Brothers" - as the Franciscans were also called - gave the new cemetery the name Greyfriars. Some prominent inhabitants of the city found their last resting place here on Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Overview of Greyfriar's Graveyard

To the right of Bobby's grave you can start by getting an overview of the cemetery. A map shows the different areas as well as the location of the gravesites of several prominent inhabitants of Edinburgh. All graves are numbered on the map. I photographed the map with my cell phone, so I could easily find my way around.

The cemetery area can be divided into four partswhich were used one after the other. The oldest area is located to the right of the entrance, where the monastery once stood. The tombs here are from the early 17th century. After that, burials took place in the area to the left of the church. On the third section, the "Covenanters Prison" in the southwest, the first burials took place from 1705 onwards. The youngest section of the cemetery is behind the rest of the "Flooden Wall". Here the first burial took place in 1800.

Grave Ornaments and Symbolism

On the Greyfriars Kirkyard you can see a variety of different tomb monuments.Among them are mausoleums or tombs with small walls or metal fences. There are also lying and standing flat stones, crosses, as well as head- and footstones, obelisks, monuments and sarcophagi. A special kind of burial place are the mortsafes - but more about this later.

Interesting: Many burial sites were once surrounded by metal cages or fences. In the 1940s, however, these were often removed - the raw material was needed for the steel industry during the war.

The gravestones on Greyfriars are often artistically decorated with grave symbols. Three themes are frequently encountered: Mortality, immortality through resurrection and the means of rescue.

Examples of symbols of mortality are images of coffins, deathbeds, skulls with and without wings, hourglasses, torches and the so-called Green Man. For immortality, on the other hand, there are angel figures, hearts, crowns, lamps, trumpets, winged souls. In addition, Animals are often carved on gravestones - either because of a personal connection to the animal or as a symbol. These include lions, lambs, cranes, horses, doves, snakes, peacocks and more. The profession of the deceased was also often depicted on the gravestones, for example by the tools used in the respective profession. In addition, plants often decorate the gravestones. They also usually have a symbolic meaning. For example, the flower forget-me-not stands for a deep love, which even death cannot end. Beautiful, right?

The Cemetery Church and the King of Terror

The church at Greyfriars Cemetery was the first church built after the Reformation. It was consecrated in 1620. Its official name is Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk.It is the center of an active community and can even be visited. Unfortunately it was closed during my visit due to Covid-19 and I could only view it from the outside.

The outer facade of the church bears several grave reliefs. One of them is particularly striking: the “King of Terror”With a scythe in his hand, the grinning skeleton is clearly a symbol of mortality. Or more clearly: it is death in person.

Mortsafe - a Safe for the Dead

In the early 19th century, the curiosity of the physicians at the "Royal College of Surgeons" could not be stopped. Officially, however, only one corpse of an executed man was placed at the disposal of the College, founded in 1505, for anatomical examinations. More corpses had to be brought in. No matter how, the physicians - above all the well-known Dr. Robert Knox - turned a blind eye to this. Grave robbers began to plunder fresh gravesites. Clothes or jewelry were left behind in the grave. The naked corpses were then often transported away hidden in beer barrels. It did not take long and the sale of stolen corpses became a lucrative business.

Countermeasures were taken to prevent the robbery of the corpses: the mortsafe - a metal cage - was placed over the freshly buried bodyuntil the corpse had decomposed to such an extent that it was no longer of interest for medicine. In addition to the mortsafes, burial sites were also closed with walls and iron bars. Examples of this can be found to the left of the church.

Concerned relatives tied bracelets around the deceased, which were connected to a bell by a rope. When the body was moved, the bell sounded the alarm. In addition, they guarded the cemeteries in guard groups day and night. For this purpose, a small guard house was erected at the entrance of the cemetery. Only the Anatomy Law of 1832,which regulated the legal use of corpses, put an end to the robbery of corpses.

William Burke and William Hare made it a little easier for themselves. They lured lodgers into their house and murdered them. In the period 1827-1828 they supplied the anatomy school with 16 fresh corpses. But the two murderers were caught and Hare betrayed his partner Burke afterwards. He was finally charged with the total debt, whereupon he was executed in 1829. His death mask and skeleton as well as a book bound in his skin can be seen in the Surgeon's Hall Museum .

The Flodden Wall

On the west side of the cemetery, the remains of the 16th century defense wall an turbulente Zeiten. Die “Flodden Wall” wurde im Jahr 1560 fertiggestellt. Anlass dafür war die Niederlage Schottlands in der Schlacht von Flodden gegen die Engländer im Jahr 1513. Hinter der etwa 7,3 Meter hohen und 1,3 Meter dicken Mauer lebten damals rund 10.000 Menschen auf einer Fläche von 57 Hektar. Sechs Tore gaben den Weg in die Stadt frei. Zur Abschreckung von Verbrechern wurde an den heads and limbs of executed criminals were displayed at the city gates .

The wall was supposed to protect Edinburgh from an English invasion. But this never took place. Probably the wall would not have helped much. It was much more suitable for controlling trade and preventing smuggling.

In the middle of the 18th century, the city walls became more of an obstacle for the growing city. Parts of the walls were therefore torn down. Today there are only a few remains of Edinburgh's protective wall, the most famous being the one at Greyfriars Kirkyard. Other sections can also be seen at the Vennel and Drummond Street.

Covenanters’ Prison

During the reign of Charles II in the 17th century a religious battle was fought. Because Charles wanted to align the Scottish Church with the English Church. The believing Scots resisted the new "Common Book of Prayer", there were riots and protests in churches. The so-called "Covenanters" then united the resistance and signed the "National Pact" in 1638. Where? At the Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. A plaque to the left of the entrance today commemorates the signatories of the document that vehemently rejects Charles' religious changes.

The following year the conflict had escalated into a war between Charles II and the Covenanters. Finally, around 1,200 Covenanters were captured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679. They were locked in a field south of the churchyard for five months. The prisoners were beaten and tortured by the guards, and some died of starvation and harsh conditions. After declaring that they would never again use a weapon against the crown, the majority of the prisoners were finally released. But 380 prisoners did not take this oath. They should then be brought to the colonies by ship. But they never got there. The ship got caught in a storm and sank near the Orkneys.

Later, in the 18th century, this field became part of Greyfriars Cemetery and is called "Covenanters Prison". Today the area is only accessible as part of guided tours. It is supposed to be haunted!

Mackenzie's Poltergeist in Greyfriars Cemetery

Early in the morning, the attorney George Mackenzie was prosecuting the Covenanters and was known for its cruelty. After his death he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard - not far from Covenanters Prison. His pretty mausoleum with the blue doors has repeatedly been the target of tomb desecrations.In 1999 a homeless man even took up residence in the mausoleum. Since then, reports of ghost encounters and attackshave increased. Nocturnal visitors to Greyfriars suddenly had abrasions, scratches or bruises after their stay at the said grave site. Where would these come from if not from the Mackenzie Poltergeist? The mind is even blamed for broken fingers and death. In addition, an exorcist is said to have sensed evil forces in the cemetery that were after his life. He died shortly after of a heart attack.

Spooky! But I can't really believe in it. But my curiosity was aroused. And so I finally booked an evening cemetery tour with City of the Dead Tours. When I was back in my hotel room afterwards, I immediately checked for bruises and scratches. Nothing.

Inspiration for Harry Potter

Also the author of the Harry Potter novels - J.K. Rowling - was drawn to the flair of Greyfriars Cemetery in Edinburgh. And more: she also found inspiration for her novels on walks between the tombstones. Some of the names carved on the tombstones here even reappear in their books. Best known is certainly Thomas Riddle, who found his way into Rowling's stories as Tom Riddle. It is the name of the boy who later became the dreaded Lord Voldemort.

A Herb Garden in the Cemetery

But the dog Bobby and the Mackenzie poltergeist are not the only unusual things in Greyfriars Cemetery. Every now and then you come across small wooden signs in front of lush flower beds. What can be read on the wooden signs? One says “Kitchen Herbs” (Küchenkräuter)and another says “Medical Herbs” (Medizinkräuter)There are a few more. Have you seen this before? That herbs are grown in a cemetery? I think it's great. Reminds me a bit of a personal story: we planted a tomato plant for my beloved Grandma on her grave - she loved tomatoes.

Location and Opening Hours of the Greyfriars Cemetery in Edinburgh

Greyfriars Kirkyard is on the edge of historic Edinburgh, just a five minute walk from the Grassmarket .

There are two entrances to the cemetery. Both are on Candlemaker Row, east of Grassmarket. The entrance further above is directly opposite the National Museum. There is also the statue of Greyfriars Bobby here.

Like most cemeteries in Scotland, Greyfriars Kirkyard is open 24 hours a day.You can therefore visit it at any time for free on your own. There are also guided tours that take you to the otherwise locked area of the cemetery.

The Old Man of Hoy is the most popular attraction on Hoy and also its landmark.The almost 137 meter high red sandstone Sea Stack is furthermore one of the highest in Great Britain. Once the Old Man of Hoy was part of the cliffs. Over time, however, the sea has eroded the sandstone cliffs to such an extent that the Sea Stack was separated from the land. A drawing from 1814 shows the Old Man of Hoy still standing on two "legs" - an arch at the foot of the tower formed a broad base.

The Old Man of Hoy was first climbed in 1966 by the climbers Chris Bonington, Rusty Baillie and Tom Patey.The following year the climb was repeated for a live television broadcast. Afterwards, the rock needle truly captivated mountaineers. It is quite possible that you will see climbers during your hike.

An easier way to experience the Old Man of Hoy on the Orkneys is to walk along the coast from Rackick.

Where is the Old Man of Hoy located?

The Sea Stack Old Man of Hoy is located on the west coast of Hoy Island, one of the Orkney Islands. It can only be reached on foot. Starting point for the hike is the village of Rackwick in the south of Hoy.

Please note: The Isle of Hoy can only be reached by ferry.There are two ways to get to Hoy:

1. from Houton (Mainland Orkney) to Lyness (Hoy) - vehicles and pedestrians. For details please see Orkney Ferries.

2. from Stromness (Mainland Orkney) to Moaness (North Hoy) - pedestrians and bikes ONLY. For details please see Orkney Ferries.

For departure times and costs, please see the respective Orkney Ferries page. The booking is done by phone, an online booking is not possible. 

Ways to get to Rackwick

By car: From the ferry terminal in Lyness it takes about 30 minutes. However, it is best to plan a little more time for stopovers.

By bike: From the ferry terminal in Moaness you will travel 9.2 kilometers to Rackwick. You should plan a good 30 to 40 minutes for this.

On foot: From Moaness to Rackwick there is a 7.25 kilometer long hiking trail, the so-called Rackwick Glen route. You should plan about 2 hours for one way. If you only want to walk the route once, you can also book a cab.

We took the ferry from Houten to Lyness with our car. So we were flexible and could also visit other interesting places on Hoy. The ferry costs there and back for two passengers with a car was 62 pounds. To have some more time, we camped one night at the Bothy in Rackwick.

"Hoy" comes from the Old Norse "Ha-ey" which means "the high island". And indeed: Hoy is much more mountainous than the rest of the Orkneys. The highest elevation is Ward Hill with 479 meters.

Description of the Walk to the Old Man of Hoy

Starting Point Rackwick

The starting point of the hike is in the small village of Rackwick.The access to the parking lot is signposted. Two information boards give an overview of the hike and the village Rackwick. You will also find information about public toilets and camping facilities at Bothy,a small hut on Rackwick beach.

View of the most beautiful Beach of the Orkneys

From here you follow the main road through the village towards the coast. Then the signposted path bends off and zigzags up the mountain flank.With every meter of altitude the view of Rackwick Bay with its fantastic white sandy beach gets better. It is said to be the most beautiful beach of the Orkneys. That may be true, I haven't seen a more beautiful one.

View of the Old Man of Hoy

Almost at the top, a bench with a view invites you to take a break. Then the path continues and after a bend reaches the highest point. Finally the Old Man of Hoy comes into sight.However, it is still a long way to go. Since the sea stack is with 137 meters higher than the coast, it towers above it and the top of the Old Man of Hoy is already visible.

Now the trail goes slightly downhill for quite a while. However, we could not enjoy this part of the hike as much as we had hoped because it was raining cats and dogs. Shortly before the viewpoint on the Old Man of Hoy it luckily cleared up again.

What a sight! Proudly the Old Man of Hoy stands in front of the coast and defies wind and waves. But the forces of nature change the rocky coast and will probably not stop at the Old Man of Hoy any time in the future. There is a stony path down to the foot of the rock needle.But we did not go down.

After I photographed the Old Man of Hoy from all sides and we shared our picnic with a fearless herring gull, we set off again. It goes the same way back.

If you want to, you can hike further along the coast to the impressive cliffs at St. John's Head. For the way there and back you should plan about two additional hours.

Tip: Better take some more provisions to the island of Hoy. There are hardly any possibilities to buy more.

Here Comes the Rain Again

Hoy was the filming location for the music video of the song Here Comes the Rain Again by British pop duo Eurythmics.My partner had played the song to get me in the mood for the hike. Afterwards the song went into an endless loop in my ears. And as almost expected: during our tour it started to rain several times. Magical!

Tip: Never leave your rain pants in the car!

A Gift of the Gods

Today it is a tragedy - but back then it was a gift from the gods. In 1876 a huge right whale washed up on the coast near Northside, Birsay. It is assumed that it was already dead. Whale products were extremely valuable at that time. Normally a specialized company took care of the complete exploitation of the carcasses. The blubber was processed into oil and the bones into fertilizer. But things went differently with the right whale from Birsay.

The local men wanted to recycle the animal themselves - alone. And thus make more profit, because the sale of whale oil was very worthwhile at that time. They bought the whale and began to cut up the carcass and process blubber and bones. The first half was done. Now it was the other side's turn, the whale had to be flipped. But the villagers had neither the manpower nor the equipment to accomplish this turn-around. What a disappointment! But at least the men from Northside got away without financial losses. Finally, half of the whale lay on the beach and decayed. It is said to have taken about 25 years to decompose the remaining carcass and wash away the bones.

The Secret of the Whalebone Sculpture

But not all bones disappeared in the sea. It was common practice at that time for the Orcadians to make all kinds of practical and decorative objects from whale bones. For example, a whirl of the whale was used as a milking stool. From a jawbone and the back of the skull, the whalebone sculpture was created, probably the most enigmatic sculpture of the Orkneys. The about 2-meter-high structure can be seen from afar from the sea and from land. It is assumed that the sculpture was erected between 1880 and 1890. However, it is still unclear who did this. What purpose did this structure serve? Were the Orcadians superstitious and built a monument for the dead whale? Or did the erected bones perhaps served as a landmark for the fishermen? It remains a mystery.

Wind and weather as well as climbing children have left their marks on the Whalbone sculpture. Therefore, the Birsay Heritage Trust repaired the sculpture in 1997 and stabilized the bones. In January 2008, however, the whale bones were torn down by a storm. But even then the Birsay Heritage Trust was able to save the sculpture. Now a metal rod strengthens the jawbone and a concrete foundation also ensures a stable stand. This time a bit further away from the cliffs. Hopefully for many more years to come!

Whaling in Scotland

First evidence of whaling in Scotland was found in Bronze Age settlements. There whale bones were used for construction and decoration. Commercial whaling then began in the Middle Ages. In the 1750s whaling was carried out in most Scottish ports. Starting in the 1770s, whaling fleets headed for the Davis Strait and hired crew members in Stromness. There was also a whale processing factory on the Orkneys. But from the beginning of the 20th century the whaling industry declined. In 1963, the last whaling company finally sold its ships, ending whaling in Scotland.

What are right whales?
What are right whales? On the basis of the jaw-bone, one recognizes that the whale of Birsay was a baleen whale. These feed on plankton in contrast to toothed whales. Instead of the teeth, the baleen whales have long horn-plates in the upper jaw, the so-called baleens. With these they filter the plankton from the water. Baleen whales were popular with whalers because they were large and rich in blubber. They also swam slowly and did not sink after being killed. Baleen whales are divided into three families: Right whales, gray whales and furrow whales. The approximately 15 to 20 meters long right whales were decimated by hunting the most severely from all whales.

Walk to the Whalebone Sculpture of the Orkneys

The Whalebone sculpture is located in the northwest of the main island of the Orkneys. You drive to the headland near Birsay, where you will find a park and picnic area. Most people come here to visit Birsay Tidal Island and the Brough of Birsay. To get to the sculpture, however, you will walk in the opposite direction along the “Skiba Geo Pfad” entlang.

The Skiba Geo Path runs along one of the most beautiful coasts of the Orkneys.If you are lucky you can even see seals on the rocks. About halfway you will pass a restored 19th century fishing cottage. At the bottom of the cliff there are boat-shaped depressions called "nousts". This is where the fishermen used to pull their boats to the shore for protection and to store them during the winter.

Roadtrip North Coast 500 in Scotland - the Route

The North Coast 500 (NC 500) is a circuit around the northern tip of Scotland. The entire route is 807 kilometers (502 miles) long and consists largely of single track roads. You will find these mainly on the west coast, where the landscape is particularly impressive. The map below gives you a first overview. I have marked interesting places with a red dot. There is also a photo for each point, so that you know immediately what to expect there.

The route of the North Coast 500 starts in Inverness, the metropolis of the Scottish Highlands. From here it continues over the Dornoch Firth in a north-easterly direction to John O'Groats. Here you can see the Orkney Islands for the first time. Then the route turns to the west and soon the northernmost point of the British main island at Dunnet Head is reached. Then follows a beautiful drive along the coast with several white sandy beaches like in a picture book. The stately waves turn some of the beaches into surf hotspots, for example around Thurso.

The route that now follows from Durness to Ullapool is the most spectacular section of the NC500, because here are the legendary Highlands, white beaches and bizarre rocky coasts as you know them from advertising brochures. The Assynt region near Ullapool combines the best that the Highlands have to offer. The high mountains like the Suilven invite you to challenging hikes. The fishing location Ullapool is the base for many outdoor sportsmen and also the only larger city on the northwest coast.

The tour continues into the Wester Ross region, from where there are views of the Isle of Skye. In the coastal town of Gairloch, boat trips promise good chances to observe whales, dolphins or basking sharks. But the icing on the cake of the NC 500 is the breathtaking Bealach Na Ba Pass on the Applecross Peninsula. In hairpin bends, the single track road winds steeply up to 626 meters and just as steeply down again. From here the way back to Inverness begins.

Tip: Do you have a little more time? Then a side trip to the Orkneysis worthwhile. The islands are littered with prehistoric relics and ruins from both world wars. There are also great hiking possibilities along the coast and white sandy beaches invite you to dream. With the car ferries from Thurso or Gils you reach the islands after about one hour. You should plan at least two to three days for the Orkneys.

Along the North Coast 500 there is something to discover every few kilometers. Both those interested in history and outdoor enthusiasts get their money's worth. And besides the actual sights, there are rainbows, highland cattle and sheep, which give the road trip its special character. And with a lot of luck, you can even see the See Northern Lights .

East Coast - Inverness to John O'Groats

Inverness - Start and End of the North Coast 500 Road Trip

Our road trip North Coast 500 begins and ends in Inverness. The northernmost city in Great Britain is not only the gateway to the north, but also the cultural center of the Highlands. There are several places of interest, for example the Highland Museum, the Cathedral, Old High St. Stephen's Church and the Victorian Market. The Inverness Castle towers above the city on a cliff overlooking the Ness River. The architect William Burn built the castle of red sandstone in 1836 on the site of an 11th century fortress.

Stone Towers from the Iron Age - Broch Cairn Liath

In the Iron Age, i.e. between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D., hundreds of so-called Brochs were built in northern Scotland. The Brochs are round, windowless towers made of dry masonry. Typical Brochs have a diameter of 10 to 15 m and are up to 15 m high. It is assumed that the towers were residences of the landowning population. Presumably they were built by wealthy families for reasons of prestige. They are mostly located in strategic places, such as hills, peninsulas or islands. Some Brochs are located along the route of the North Coast 500, for example Cairn Liath, Nybster or Clachtoll.

Whaligoe Steps - 365 Steps to the Port

Are you free from vertigo? About 365 steps lead down to a small sheltered harbour. However, the descent is a bit adventurous. Because there is no railing and the steps are partly in bad condition. But you have a great view of the cliffs and can even watch breeding seabirds. Perfect to stretch your legs a little after some kilometers of road.

Noss Head with the Ruins of Sinclair Girnigoe Castle

At the headland of Noss Head is the most beautiful ruin on the east coast. Located directly on the cliffs, the ruins seem to merge with the cliffs and sea stacks. But the walls are actually two castles that were built here at Sinclair's Bay. First there was Girnigoe Castle, completed in the 15th century. Whereby the name Castle is a bit exaggerated. Because it was actually only a tower house. Until the 17th century, various extensions were built - these were then called Sinclair Castle. It is said that secret passages lead into rock caves - unfortunately they are no longer accessible. In 1690 the castles were finally besieged, destroyed and not repaired.

Duncansby Head - spectacular Sea Stacks and Cave

The lighthouse at Duncansby Head marks the northeasternmost point of the British main island. Countless seabirds breed on spectacular cliffs - puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes, gulls, razorbills and black guillemots. From a hiking trail you have a breathtaking view of the 60 meter high cliffs, bizarre sea stacks and a sea cave. But even more exciting is climbing down into the bay.This is possible at the lowest point of the cliffs, a rope will help you climb down. Also for the seals our visit at the beach seemed to be very exciting. During our walk in the bay we were observed by three seals the whole time.

John O’Groats – “Land’s End” im Norden

The town of John O'Groats with its 300 inhabitants is often referred to as the northernmost point of the British main island. But it is by no means. Dunnet Head lies two kilometers further north. But if you look for the greatest distance between two places on the main island, you will find it between John O'Groats in the north and Lizard Point in the south. These 1,406 kilometers are popular with road trippers, cyclists and dedicated hikers. And those who have traveled across the country like to pose at the signpost at John O'Groats harbor for a photo.

Castle of Mey - Summer Residence of the Queen Mother

The 16th century castle was the summer residence of the Queen Mother. She bought it in 1952 in a rather dilapidated condition and has spent her summer vacations here every August since. Prince Charles still comes here every July. Around the palace there are also extensive gardens that invite you to take a stroll.

Dunnet Head - Northernmost Point of the British Main Island

At Dunnet Head the wind blows around one' s ears. The northernmost point of the British main island is always windy. But it also offers spectacular views of the rocky coast and the Orkney Islands. The view is especially beautiful at sunset. Besides the lighthouse there are also some ruins of a military site on Dunnet Head.

Tip: The road to Dunnet Head offers many great places for tents and campers. Don't be late, otherwise the most beautiful places will be occupied.

Surfer Hotspot Thurso

The waves in Thurso are among the highest in Europe. Well, when we were there, the waves were not quite as high. Nevertheless there were some surfers on the water. In Thurso itself there is a beach right in town. More beautiful are the beaches outside, for example at Dunnet Bay with several high dunes.

Melvich Beach - golden Sand and Surfers Dream

Melvich Beach is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the north coast. It is especially impressive at low tide. Then the golden beach is even a bit wider.

The beach is located directly at the route of the North Coast 500. A signposted gravel road branches off to the corresponding parking lot. A short path leads you from the parking lot through the dunes to the beach. From the parking lot you can also see a distinctive mansion on the other side of the Halladale River - the Bighouse Lodge. The house was built in 1765 and was the seat of the head of Clan Mackay.

By the way, Melvich is one of the best surf spots in the area.

Strathy Point Lighthouse

Strathy Point Lighthouse is the most photogenic lighthouse along the North Coast 500, perhaps even in all of Scotland. The best perspective? You'll find it in front of the lighthouse, seawards. Here the rough cliffs reach far out into the sea and you can take pictures of the lighthouse with the rocks in the foreground. Keep right of the lighthouse and follow the narrow path to the right headland. Then climb out on the rocks until you have found your photo perspective. And of course only as far as you feel safe.

The lighthouse at Strathy Point was the first in Scotland to be built specifically for electric operation. Completed in 1958, the tower was finally fully automated in 1997 and is now remotely controlled from Edinburgh.

Viewpoint on the Dam at Tongue

The bay "Kyle of Tongue" is crossed by a long dam. During low tide, wide sandy beaches appear in the bay. From the viewpoint on the dam you have a fantastic sight over the bay to the mountains.

Smoo Cave - Waterfall in the Cave

The sea cave Smoo Cave impresses with a huge chamber at the entrance and a waterfall inside. Smoo Cave Tours also offers geological excursions from April to October. This will take you further into the cave, partially even with an rubber dinghy. Unfortunately the tours did not take place in September 2020 because of Covid-19, so our visit ended at the waterfall chamber.

The cave is well signposted. The parking lot is directly at the North Coast 500, from where stairs lead down to the cave in a short loop.

Balnakeil - Hot Chocolate, Beach Walk and Church Ruin

The Craft Village Balnakeil was once a war warning center. Today it is a hippie village with arts and crafts, galleries and hot chocolate. From 9am you can enjoy your (second) breakfast at Cocoa Mountain . There is hot chocolate, coffee, chocolates and sweet pastries. Afterwards a walk on the wide sandy beach of Balnakeilis worthwhile. For fans of ruins I can also recommend the cemetery with a church ruin directly at the beach parking lot.

West Coast - Durness to the Applecross Peninsula

Worthwhile Detour to Kinlochbervie

Kinlochbervie is known for its port and fish market. But a detour is worthwhile especially in good weather because of the scenic route with great views. You want to hike to the beautiful beach Sandwood Bay? Then the road to Kinlochbervie brings you almost to the starting point of your hike.

Kylesku Bridge

Until 1984 the continuation of the journey on the North Coast 500 was only possible with a ferry. But in August 1984 Queen Elizabeth II. finally opened the Kylesku Bridge, which is worth seeing. The 277 meter long and 24 meter high box girder bridge spans the Lochs Glencoul and Glendhu in an arch. From the viewpoint in front of the bridge you have a great panoramic view of the Kylesku Bridge.

Lighthouse of Stoer and Hike to the "Old Man of Stoer"

A small side road between Stoer and Clashnessie leads to the coast to the lighthouse of Stoer. Here is the starting point for an easy coastal walk to the "Old Man of Stoer". The Old Man is an about 60 meters high sea needle. I think it is the most beautiful of all I have seen. There and back it is about six kilometers walking.

Near the lighthouse it is also good for camping. A small fee is either collected in the evening or thrown into a mailbox.

On the way back from the lighthouse to the route of the NC500 I recommend a stopover at the Choc-O-Latté. Here you can spoil yourself with coffee, chocolate and delicious fresh cakes. Chickens run around freely between the tables and speculate on cake crumbs. They are just too funny.

Ardvreck Castle

What would Scotland be without its legends and spirits?The ruins of Ardweck Castle are also the subject of a scary story: The builder of the castle has promised his own daughter to the devilas a bride. In return, the devil would support him in the construction. When the time came and the devil was about to take the daughter, she threw herself off the top of the tower. Since then her spirit is said to appear in the castle.

Today not much is left of the former castle. But the remains of its walls still stand photogenic on the shore of Loch Assynt on a small peninsula. Depending on the water level this becomes an island. The castle was built in 1490 as a simple castle tower. Only about a century later the castle was extended. Right next to it there is another ruin: Calda House. It is not quite as old. The owners of the castle built it in 1726 as a modern manor house. Living in the castle was not comfortable enough for them.

Ullapool Museum

The British master builder Thomas Telford is known for the Caledonian Channel, which connects the east and west coast of Scotland. But Telford has also built churches, including the church in Ullapool. The Ullapool Museum has moved into the church building from 1829. Remains of the church furnishings are still preserved inside.

The museum informs about the history of the fishing village Ullapool. It is also the place to go for ancestry research. geht.

Corrieshalloch Gorge

Corrieshalloch Gorge is a gorge lined with tall trees. It is about 1.5 kilometers long, up to 60 meters deep and about 10 meters wide. A short walk through the forest brings you to a Victorian suspension bridge.As soon as you walk over it, it begins to swing. This creates a thrill, because directly under the bridge the waterfall Falls of Measach falls 45 meters into the depth. On the opposite side of the gorge the path then leads to another viewpoint. From here you have a beautiful view of the suspension bridge. Back on the other side of the gorge, the 2.1 kilometer long circular trail finally takes you back to the parking lot.

Corrieshalloch Gorge is a national nature reserve. A small fee is charged for access, payable at the ticket machine in the parking lot.

Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve

The Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve was established in 1951 and is the oldest reserve in Scotland. Here you can still see Caledonian pines, which once covered the whole country. The reserve is also home to martens, wild cats and eagles. Maybe you are lucky and see one or the other forest creature on your hike. At the Visitor Center near Kinlochewe you can get information about the park and the hiking trails. The possibilities range from a leisurely walk to challenging summit tours.

Delicious! Restaurant in the Walled Garden

Set in a 17th century garden surrounded by a stone wall is the award-winning Potting Shed Cafe & Restaurant. The former tearoom advertises with local ingredients and tasty dishes: the ingredients come from the 1.25 acre garden, from happy pigs and lambs and from the sea outside the front door. The fish is caught with the house-owned fishing boat. For breakfast, the menu includes classic Scottish breakfast, cakes or scones. After the meal, it is also worth taking a walk through the garden with its raised beds, herbaceous borders and flowers blooming in all colors.

Bealach Na Ba Pass - the highest Road Rise in Britain

For the winding drive over the Bealach Na Ba Pass you need good nerves. In hairpin bends, the Single Track Road winds its way up to 626 meters and down again just as steeply. It is the biggest road climb in all of Britain. The views are terrific! Practically there is also a big parking lot at the top of the pass. When clouds cover the view, wait a little bit - maybe it will clear up in 5 minutes.

Large vehicles as well as beginner drivers can choose a different route.

Tip: Do you have a rental car with automatic transmission? Then find out how to manually shift to a lower gear before you start you drive the pass. You will definitely need the engine brake .

Jumping Salmon at the Rogie Falls

Salmon that migrate up rivers and jump up waterfalls I only knew from television. Mostly rivers in Alaska are shown. But also in Scotland you can watch this spectacle in August and September. Ok, they are only single fish, but still. A fish ladder next to the main arm makes it a bit easier for the salmon. A short way leads you from the parking lot directly to the suspension bridge over the waterfall. The waterfall alone is worth a stopover.

Before getting started - Planning the Road Trip

Planning of the North Coast 500 Trip in Scotland

Along the Northwest Coast 500 there is a lot to discover, there is something for everyone: prehistoric ruins, castles, museums, beaches and hiking trails. There are also opportunities for wildlife tours by boat, multi-day kayak trips or a detour to the Isle of Skye, the Orkneys or even Shetland. Pick out your raisins and leave everything else out - otherwise it will quickly become too much.

How much time should one plan for the NC500?

We drove the route in 8 days. In the beginning the stages were longer, then they became shorter and shorter because there was simply more to see on the west coast and the roads only allowed slower progress.

Don't underestimate the driving times when planning your trip - you definitely need longer than the navigation system tells you. On the one hand, because you often have photo stops. And on the other hand, because the twisty single track roads or the camper van in front of you will quickly reduce the speed to 30 miles per hour.

Refuelling

Along the route of the North Coast 500 there are often small gas stations even in the small towns. Most of the time there is no cash point and you pay with your credit card directly at the automat. An overview of the location of the petrol stations in Scotland can be found here.

How do you want to overnight?

With a camper or car and tent you are flexible and you can stay where you want. Well, almost. You can read more about camping in Scotland by clicking here. If you want to stay in accommodation, it is better to book in advanceduring the season. Especially in the northwest between Thurso and Ullapool it can get difficult.

Driving in Scotland - Left-hand Traffic

Driving on the wrong side of the road sounds daunting at first. But I thought to myself, if my partner and I take turns driving and both are paying attention, it will work out fine. The surprise came before things really got going. The rental car provider did not accept my partner's driver's license (in the USA, driver's licenses have to be renewed every 5 years. Because of Covid-19 it all took longer. The temporary paper driver's license was not sufficient). So I suddenly became the Car Queen and had exclusive control over the steering wheel for 4 weeks - and could stop as often and where I wanted for a photo. Yeah!!!

What is it like to drive on the wrong side of the road? Actually not that difficult at all, I got used to it quickly. There are often other cars in front of you - then you just follow them. That also works in round-about traffic. You just have to be a bit careful that you look to the right. At the beginning I was very worried that I would swerve to the wrong side on one of the single track roads and collide head-on with another car. Fortunately that didn't happen, not even in the least. With oncoming traffic one gets much slower on the narrow single track roads anyway and observes the behaviour of the other car very closely.

Dos and Don'ts on the Single Track Roads

Use the passing points. They are typical for single track roads. Mostly they are signposted and can be seen from far away. Let oncoming traffic and vehicles behind you pass. I have seen some scary overtaking maneuvers on the track, because some drivers behave like a... and have blocked the roads permanently.

Stop only at clearly visible places. Stop briefly for a photo? Absolutely. But not everywhere. Make sure that you are seen on the winding, hilly road and that other vehicles are not in danger when passing by. Also, keep the passing points clear.

Better not go too fast. Adjust your speed so that you can drive safely. Especially on the single track roads and before the "Blind Summits". The speed limit is usually 60 miles / hour. However, you will often drive slower.

Watch out for motorcyclists. Especially on weekends there are many motorcyclists on the road. Mostly in larger groups. Often they ride the winding roads a little faster and like to overtake, sometimes quite wildly. Also watch out for latecomers.

Cyclists - the heroes of the NC500. Uphill, in wind and rain - hats off to the real heroes of the North Coast 500. Leave enough space when passing by and use the passing places.

Sheep, cows and other animals. They are omnipresent and can be around every corner.

Tip: Even if it's a bit more expensive, I recommend a rental car with automatic transmission.On the twisty single track roads with numerous dodges the automatic transmission was simply priceless. Especially since I can hardly imagine how to operate the shift lever with my left hand.

Little Pests: Scotland Midges and Ticks

When it comes to Scotland, everyone talks about midges. Admittedly, the morning midge attacks outside our tent were already cruel. But the ticks in the Scottish Highlands scared me even more! Because they are much bigger than the ticks I knew from Germany before. In addition, signs along some hiking trails warn against the transmission of boleriosis.
